I'm a member here (gold star) and I am linited to 6 games at once is this right or is something amiss?

Something's wrong - you should be able to play as many games as you want.

How do you know this, do you get some sort of message?

Maybe you are limited to the number of open challenges, for free members this is 3. As soon as a challenge is accepted you can make another...
