how many moves are in the longest chess game

By "in the longest chess game", do you mean a normal rated chess game between to fine gentleman, or a stupid player fighting another stupid player in an unrated match in an attempt to break the record?

So it’s 500.
What do I win?
Figure 96 pawn moves (8 of them captures) plus another 22 captures is 118 moves/captures that reset the 50 move count. Multiply by 49.5 and you have 5,841 as the upper limit.

Good reasoning, although it's 118 x 50 since each capture or pawn move can be grouped with the 49.5 moves that came before it.
The tricky part now is figuring out how to consider the fact that the same player can't make all the captures and pawn moves.
I made a blog post with the solution if you're interested:

guess a number between 200 and 300 moves (don't google this)
if you guess the right number, then you win
if you can't guess the right number then who guess the closest to that number wins
guess only one number
