How many patterns does a master know?

I don't know the exact definition, but chess patterns are not chess positions. They are some kind of piece arrangment with geometrical properties your mind can identify.

You find the same properties in another similar position and you notice the pattern.

So in the case of opposite coloured bishops, I guess there are only a couple of related patterns (blockading patterns, bishop controls the opponent passer patterns, two passed pawns on opposite sides of the board patterns, sacrifice against two connected passers pattern...)

Patterns seem pretty subjective. At some point you're just going to have to have a wild guess.
