How much is this chess set worth?

  • A friend of mine recently bought me this Mayan-Aztec chess set at an estate sale, and I'm trying to figure out what it's worth. I've searched and searched online, but the closest thing I can find is a set that folds, with different dimensions, and different carvings. The board is 24.5 inches X 24.5 inches, and it does not fold. According to my friend, it is made of hand-carved stone and wood. He says it's worth at least $300, but I'm thinking it should be worth substantially more being that I haven't found any identical to mine. If anyone can provide some insight, I'd greatly appreciate it!

You should ask in Chess Books and Equipment. But I don't think the set is valuable. It is the kind of set tourists buy in airports.

I will do that! If it's not valuable, and it's common enough that one could buy it in an airport, why am I unable to find any like it online?

Idk how old it is if I did I could make a much better estimate but I'm geussing 50-150 that's if it's fake if it's a real Aztec chess set made when the Aztecs were alive then I'm geussing 500-300 oh and it's scummy to sell gifts that your friends bought for you out of good will

A Fool & his money are soon parted.! I would not pay more than 10 bucks for that set.

I collected chess sets, boards, clocks, and other equipment related to chess since many years. I can tell you that most chess collectors would not buy this set. To be honest, I would even not take it for free. This set is similar to the thousands of Chinese figures you can find everywhere. A serious chess collector do not touch sets which pretend to be old. They want usually original pieces.
