How to at least get to 1200?

I don't know if I have a chess club in my local area, but next year I will be going to a large university that has one (I'm 17). I'll definitely check out the chess fundamentals series on youtube. How do tactics improve chess?

Here is a quick sample game from the previously mentioned Chernev and Reinfeld book: 1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 dxe4 4 Nxe4 Nf6 5 Qd3 e5 6 dxe5 Qa5+ 7 Bd2 Qxe5 8 O-O-O Nxe4 9 Qd8+ Kxd8 10 Bg5+ Ke8 11 Rd8#

As a beginner I think it would be best for you to just learn one opening against 1.e4 and one against 1.d4, so you have less opening theory to worry about, and you can recycle your main battle plans from your other games. As white I`d recommend starting with something like the London system or the scotch game.
IMO u should play others at your level and with practice you will gradually move up the table and into other skill leagues. One great thing about chess is that as long as you know the rules, there will always be people worse than you and people better than you (well unless you're Magnus). It's a vast spectrum of skill level. Keep at it and have fun!
BTW, if you read Amazon reviews on Majestic chess, the 1-star reviews all complain about unable to run the software (it is an old PC game). I'm able to run it on Windows 8.1 Pro/standard and Windows 10 standard without any problems. The key is to run it in compatibility mode (because it is a really old game).
I cannot say anything bad about Majestic chess because I absolutely love that program. It's a lot more entertaining than Chess for Dummies (which is a really good book BTW) or any chess books for a beginner (as a beginner, I didn't really like to follow games; which Majestic chess has none of it. Majestic chess teaches you notation but doesn't ask you to follow any games in notation format (being a PC program, it just plays those games for you : )
