Well yes, that's obvious for now, maybe I should have explained that better. My point was that the Arena titles are new and I wondered if they'd be accepted in the future. I'll now add to that if not for free membership then as recognition of the title holder. After all chess.com recogonises the lesser NM title why shouldn't they recognise the full spectrum of FIDE title.

Wasn't expecting a discussion, was simply pointing out FIDE have some new titles.

I'm pretty certain the site will never recognize online titles.

That's just ridiculous.  FIDE, the highest authority in chess, recognise and award on-line titles. A FIDE chess title is just that and if chess.com don't recognise the title they are not recognising FIDE, which is utter nonsense.  Whether or not they choose to honour online titles with a highlighted prefix or free membership is a different matter. Also (and this we have learned through COVID-19) due to the expense of international travel, month long hotel stays etc on-line chess is all set to be a future compliment to OTB chess.

Maybe one day FIDE will make it possible to play online for real elo points and titles (which would be really cool and inclusive...). As for now not even FIDE recognizes its own online titles. ;-)

The site recognizes titles gained in over the board, regular rated play.  FIDE creating for-profit online tiles does not obligated a private company to add those titles or officially recognize them. By recognize, that means the site would do anything special to denote a member had it

The site recognizes OTB titles and provides benefits to those players because it adds value to the site. In my personal opinion, there is no value to the site to recognize online titles.

Quite a bold statement as CC already recognizes honorary Titles handed out to players of any rating. I fully expect the new FIDE Titles to be recognized sometime in the future as OTB Chess may not make any substantial comeback for years. FIDE Titles are on hold- perhaps for years for the vast majority of players world wide.
We may well see CC inventing their own Titles - allowing players to play in Titled events once their identity is verified.

Isn’t it about creating opportunities for the new and rising players? Right now - the opportunities are nil to achieve standard FIDE Titles. I don’t see this changing any time in the foreseeable future.

The site recognizes official OTB titles and I personally don't expect they will do anything regarding online titles. There really isn't any upside for them to do so.

No, the site's recognition of titles isn't about that. FIDE's addition of the online titles is primarily a revenue generation system.

this entire thread is crazy. people are trying to achieve title status so they don't have to pay the $100 per year charge (or whatever it is) for a diamond membership? if they channeled one one millionth of their effort trying to get titled into any job/career/workplace situation, $100 per year wouldnt be an obstacle for them.

And CC’s system is not?

In a round about way, but the site does not charge titled players to add the title, has employees that spend time to verify title applications, hosts free titled only events with cash prizes. So there are expenses related to that benefit.

People want to play titled players and the site provides benefits for those titled players. Some of the people drawn to the site because of the titled players may upgrade to premium.

I don't imagine anyone is joining the site for a chance to play or watch the games of an AGM, for example.

Yes new titles as opposed to the older titles first introduced in 1950 and revised from to time, maybe I should have said newer.

AlienChess86

to become a a CM you need to have an official rating of 2200 on the side ratings for FM you need 2300 for IM and GM it is more complicated if you search it up it will tell you or you could watch levy rozman's video here is the link for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4nTq2XPvAc

washedretiredchessplayer

wow dude that will take years, although it's good to start planning your career but unless you can be like Goh Zi Han (quite impossible) you actually could be a CM happy.png. Anyways good luck wink.png

IsraeliGal

Be gifted at chess from toddler years, play nonstop 8 hours a day for a decade till ur in ur mid teens, get ur fide rating up from playing OTB ranked tournaments, beating other competitive players, then join titled tournaments to get Norms for ur titles, battling against other titled CM, FM, GM players and somehow defeat enough to get all of ur norms.

In other words, forget it.

TayYiXiang

Just get a title.

i know. But still, how do I become a CM or FM or NM?

with a diamond membership

Made_in_Shoreditch

Realistically the best advise would be to join a proper OTB chess club. Study all aspects of the game and strive to become good enough for selection in club representative teams. Work it from there.
