How to have checkmate without a tied?

I just want to know what are the conditions for a checkmate and the conditions for a tie?

Ok I think I found the answer. When an opponent is not checked but can't move, it's a tie but when this opponent is check and then can't move then he is checkmate.
Am I ok?
