what worked for me is trying to not play passive, an example here is if your opponent pins your knight to the queen, some people would just move the bishop to unpin it, but in the long term your bishop isnt doing anything and you dont have any attacks, so to improve i think you should try to counter attack instead of defending ( most of the time )

Learn exactly how to think in the opening, middlegame and endgame — this is what I teach.
Always blunder-check your moves.
Solve tactics in the right way.
Analyze your games.
Study games of strong players.
Learn how to be more psychologically resilient.
Work on your time management skills.
Get a coach if you can.

Forget about openings, I am 1600-1700 and I always play the same opening (king's knight with white and french defense with black). You have to be really good at spotting tactics, and if you're the kind of player who gets bored with drawish positions, always play moves that create imbalances (unless they're losing moves ofc).

Don't waste all your time studying opening, lines, and all that nonsense when you're below 2000. Learn the basic tactics (e.g. forks, pins, skewers, etc.) and just look for opportunities for those tactics in that position. Learn basic positional foundations (e.g. if you're down on material don't trade, don't trade active pieces for less active ones). Also do puzzles as well. In essence, just learn all the basic fundamentals and play the game by ear.

If you think you've plateaued (gotten stuck with little hope of improving), check this out:

Analyse your games once a week, understand why you lost, and you'll improve very quickly.
