How to improve chess ?

Hey, so i am an expert level player that has been constantly trying to reach a master level of chess knowledge. Now since it is summer, i have lots of free time to improve but as many tactics as i solve or as many positional problems that i solve, i can't notice any improvements. Does anyone have any suggestions that i could try out that might show any sort of improvements in my chess?

there are a few good books that might be good for you, but depending on how strong you are... idk. but these will almost def help you:

Have you read Reassess my Chess by Jeremy Silman?

Have you read My System by Aron Nimzowitsch?

also, how good is your opening theory, if youre training tactics a lot but not getting better at chess it may be cause your not implementing a proper plan from the beginning of the game. this may or may not help, im far from an expert

Thanks for the suggestions clivingston but yeah. i've read both of those books, and yeah they are great books. I believe that i'm also pretty booked up in my openings since i dedicated about a month of intense opening preparation. Maybe i should ask, how to train to find the best move in a certain position

Why are you losing your OTB games? Are there any patterns? If you can't find patterns in your losses, maybe a good use of your resources would be to hire a coach to look at them at suggest what you should be working on based upon your game play?

Look at dvoretsky's School of future champions books

You often won't notice any improvements to your ability at all ever, the same way you don't notice the grass growing or your hair getting longer or a child growing, etc.  Getting better is often a very slow and gradual process.  It can take years.

I've read it takes some players a long time to go from the Expert level (USCF rating 2000-2199) to the Master level.  2200+.  (And, of course, many players never are able to reach that level at all.)

Thanks Tom500, i'll look at them, and MrEdCollins, i guess so but my friend, who was an expert recently became a National Master in a very short amount of time.

At your level, it's probably worth asking a coach (FM+) for advice. You may also ask your friend who made master very quickly to give you some hints Smile

use your intuition ! logic can only take you so far.

I have scanned your online games that are available on your home page.

Have you played any USCF or FIDE rated tournament games? If so, would you be willing to post some of them on this forum topic?
