How to stay motivated (minor rant)

I feel your pain mjharris77. I've been trying to get back to 1800 on Rapid for over a year, and just like you I don't feel as if I'm improving either. Every time I approach 1800 I lose several games in a row (or the site crashes and I lose points that way) and have to start the climb all over again. It's aggravating to say the least.

According to my stats I am in the top 3% of the site, but it sure doesn't feel like it. It's gotten to the point where I assume everyone is subtly using engines, as in some of my games that I've analyzed the analysis board says that my opponent didn't make a single mistake - it's hard to stay motivated when that happens! At one point I lost so much motivation to play online chess that I didn't come to this site for months.

Hey, I am interested in this group! I would love to play games against higher rated players, and I am serious about improvement as well. I would enjoy analyzing games and talking about my deficiencies and blunders in chess. Would you mind sending me an invite as well? Thanks!

I would advise you to play better opponents than you. You will improve much faster if you have defeats that highlight your deficiencies. Invest in defeats as learning tool and you will be generously rewarded in the long run. We have made a group were the lower rated can challenge the higher rated and then we both analyse the game. Message me to send you invitation if you want(it's a small group for only few dedicated students).

I will also advise you to play longer games. Start with something like 30/5 but 45/45 must be your goal. If you can't find opponents you can play against me. We can certainly find 3-4 times a week that we are both on line.

Since you take it so seriously I will also advise you to invest in studying endgames. You can never really be a good player without knowing the fundamental endgames as they will trmemndously help you improve your analytical skill and later good endgame technique will allow you to play the middlegame and the endgame better.

Thank you. I'd like to join said group. happy.png And yes my end games do need work since sometimes I blunder a winning end game or even end up stalemating a checkmate. It does happen unfortunately.

I still want to record progress as I said in a thread of mine, but yes I'll try and see if I can get long games like 45 minutes a side, that way I won't be pressured into thinking fast, and will also get me used to slower chess and keeping calm in tough positions. happy.png

At the OP's level, I'd get a nice big tournament board and pieces + Silmans Htryc 4th edition, and start studying the book. (yes, old school style, by hand, real board and pieces=nothing else will make you improve, because like that you actually apply yourself) . Study this book like it's gold = rating goes up 400 points or more. Peace.

I have boards, that's not an issue. Just to clarify, do you mean this book? Theres no preview but it's only £20, and is over 600 pages so good value. happy.png

Why so serious ? Just enjoy the game the way it is. Just go wild on the board and see what happens.

That seems a terrible idea

That sounds like something a very young child would do...we are looking for serious improvement. That is a great way to lose a lot of games!

I've seen in the past people complaining when others post problems about how to improve etc and complain about whiners and whingers. I'm not trying to be like that.

I think that experimentation is crucial to success, I guess. Try some gambits, experiment with a new opening, maybe try a speculative sacrifice. Learning what not to do, can often shape your vision of what to do. I may not really be the best person to give advice (my ~1500 rating is deceptive, since I've only played one game tongue.png), since I am rated similarly to both of you in real life, but I can safely say that, without experimenting, I would be still hovering around 600. Anyways, best of luck to both of you! happy.png

Hmm... sure Deardrie was female. But we haven't heard for a while... which is good, given the amount of dribbling idiocy she used to spew.

Look... you answered your question? Drop bullet and blitz... play rapid. Simply by slowing, thinking about moves... you will improve. More concerning is motivation... you sound like playing is a chore?

I think I got a cold, and my advice is to avoid playing chess when you have a cold.
