Huge Tactics Rating fluctuation

Over the last three days or so I've watched my tactics rating swing from 1100 to 1400 (WOOHOO!) down to 1000 (NEGATIVE WOOHOO!) and I find that last incredibly alarming and disheartening. Is this a normal thing to expect or am I actually getting worse at tactics? Has anyone else experienced this? Why could this be happening?

Every successful puzzle for me at this point generally only yields +1 or +3 points or so, no matter how far below the target time they are, so it feels like it's going to take literally hundreds of puzzles to climb back up.

Part of it I think is becoming a diamond member suddenly means unlimited tactics, which is a huge temptation. When you only have five, you have to make them count. When you have infinity, I feel like you don't treat them with the same level of respect.

But does anyone have any idea what could be going on? Could it be tactics overload? Should I divert my attention to some other part of the game for awhile?

3 days is not anywhere near close enough to get any kind of accurate data.

Your score is based on how you perform compared with the difficulty of the puzzle, if you’re making mistakes on puzzles way below your rating then you’ll drop quickly. The system will be finding your level and if it thinks you’re much too high because of repeat errors your rating will drop like that.

I started puzzles again the past couple of weeks but treating them properly, my rating has gone up 400 points and that’s based on nearly 1000 puzzles but many of them over 12 months ago.

Last 3 days, but I've been steadily at around 1150, 1200 for the last 3 years, and I've never been as high as 1300.

Yeah, mine had been going up recently as I think I have made a breakthrough in tactical acuity, because over the course of those two nights I climbed nearly two hundred points, but the last two days or so I've been failing miserably at tactics puzzles as low as 800.

Seeing myself tank like that makes me nervous. I'm wondering if I'm just tired out tactically, and should give them a break. But if so, what else is a pre-1500 supposed to study? Everywhere I look in "hi im new wat shud i study" threads the answer always seems to be tactics, tactics, tactics. Don't do anything else until tactics. Only once you can consistently beat Stockfish 10 in accurate tactical calculation speed should you consider opening a chess book. Oh yeah and do knight's tours with your eyes closed. Tactically.

The main thing is to take your time and get the solution right, work on getting them right before increasing speed. Look at all variations and make sure you're not making an error. The first move will often be fairly obvious but then there are a few variations. You could find a solution that wins a piece but misses a mate and you'll lose points.

Try doing them fast till you get to 1800 in tactics (not more than 1 min) but review the mistake you make multiple times. After reaching 1800 take your time and focus on accuracy.

Don't worry about rating just focus on learning the patterns if you don't get them in first try. After some time your rating will increase automatically using this method.

You can study endgames. Actually, it has some really good drills on this site and I also feel that can help your game even more than tactics. Then, you can return to tactics with a fresh mind and with additional endgame knowledge wink.png

Tactics are tough. I always experience that some days I'm on fire, and other days my brain is on r-tard mode and I can't solve jack. I'm still improving though. don't give up and you'll notice that that trend of going up and down won't stop but you'll be a lot better than if you quit.

It is also very possible new tactics have been added and could be causing fluctuations as well.

New positions/patterns will come. Some 1300 tactics is harder than 2200 tactics. It's a bit random if you gain or loose 15 points if you solve it or not. Some days is good, some bad. If you goes on a bad streak it's easy to go on "tilt" (poker term) and the rating will drop like a rock within 30 minutes.
