Me and my friend had a bet, who can improve more. At the moment im rated around 1800, 1826 to be exact and he has around 1690. True, he is more into chess than i am so we made a bet. I study 5 days a week for 2 hours with my mentor nad do no work at home (its enough what i do at the class)and he has

Agreed. Also, if one of them gets a mentor, then he'd have little choice unless he drops the mentor. The other one supposedly enjoys chess even more. A final motivator would be the challenge itself, when not only $100 is on the line (which is a big deal for kids and probably many adults), but also ego/pride.
