So, three things I want to ask. It's okay if you can't answer all of them:
1. Tournaments: How do I enter one? I heard you are given a standard rating when you first start off. Is that true? How do tournaments work? is it better to enter with friends or is it normal to just go by yourself? Also, what chess rating should I aim for on chess.com before entering a tournament? I've been wanting to enter one for some time now, but I just don't have any clue.
2. Goals: Kind of a dumb question, but recently I've been trying to study the game rather than play casually. I am around 1250. Is a rating of 2000 even doable? Or do I just have to be naturally talented at the game to achieve that? again, dumb question but I don't really have a goal in mind right now.
3. Chess Partner: I was hoping to find a friend or coach that would like to play chess with me once a week. (Someone who is maybe 1600+) Just so I can see if I am improving at all throughout the weeks while I learn as much as I can. For example: Every Sunday we play 3-5 games and see if I am doing better than the week before. If anyone is interested, please let me know
Hey man. 1. IRL tournaments? If so, that so called "start off" rating is when you play in FIDE tournaments. They give you a rating based on your "level of play" which I'm not sure what the formula is but W/L probably has a sizable impact. If you just go into any tournament then no one is gonna give you a rating that matters. FIDE also has a site online you can create an account. And for the second part, I don't think your Chess.com rating should matter in your decision to go play in tournaments! Obviously practice, but as long as you are a solid player (1250 is definitely good starter level) which leads into #2 It is absolutely possible. Study, play online and analyze. Don't worry about rating but instead improving and being ready to enter those tournaments you hope to enter. 3. I am not good enough to be a chess partner/coach, but I'm pretty sure there's some clubs on here that have that sort of thing!
