@Morphys-Revenge You are just fooling yourself man.. Its all about memory. There is almost non strategy. Game Masters just pick an opening variation and play until whoever is going to stop playing from memory first. Its all super artificial and bland now. I play all kinds of strategy games. They only reason i still play chess from time to time is cuz of nostalgia and because i invested too much time in the past as a kid. It brakes my heart to say it but its the truth.

But if someone that has memorized everything meet someone that has memorized everything, then what?

Challenge me to a game of 960 anytime. I started playing it to break away from the memorized patterns. I only play Daily, though.

That's very rude of you.

Lol if you were Kim Peeks then maybe you’d be right about chess being all about memorization. But there will always be a novelty or always be an alternative or unexpected move. And maybe to the machines it would be a blunder or even just easy to win. But, we are not machines so even though there are plenty of over analyzed openings and variations there is always something and that’s not even factoring in the human condition. People forget, especially that 30 move deep line in the Ruy Lopez. You bette believe they didn’t memorize all of the side variations, and even if it’s not the best continuation of it plays to your strengths and your opponent isn’t a bot then anything is possible! I just wish that everyone can see the beauty of the unexpected even in these times of computers.

Another 1200 player with an opinion.

I've had the same thought as the OP on occasion, but I definitely agree with gdzen. The thrill of the game is forcing the board into a pattern you know you can win.

I suck at chess too. I wish I could quit, but I'm a kid that has parents.

There is definitely alot less strategy than most players come into the game expecting , but its definitely not just a game of memory like you seem to be making it out to be.

I could not disagree more. This statement is absolutely false. There is way more strategy that could imagine. Clearly.

Comparative to a game like go, definitely not. People with experience with other strategy games can attest to this. Chess has a great deal of tactics, but strategy definitely takes a back seat. Unless you're considering tactics and strategy to be the same. While strategy is an important part of chess, its not at the forefront. There is a reason why chess computers that simply calculate millions of moves with some basic rules to guide position evaluation can beat even the strongest human players.

Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory, but Tactics without Strategy is the noise before defeat

World players ,calculate a lot, and it’s not just based on memorization — very little of it, actually. Otherwise, why would these players sometimes think for over an hour in important tournaments? If it were just a question of memorization, the game would end in under 10 minutes. How can you explain a top player spending 40 minutes on a move if it’s only memorization?playhand The only case where mid-game is about memorization is memorizing techniques. Would a GM spend 40 minutes on a move just to remember they need to exploit a weak square? Chess is primarily based on skills, and GMs spend a lot of time thinking to calculate possible variations; calculation itself is a skill.

well, it seems this post seemed genuine, dude hasnt been online in 2 years

Max Deutsch once tried to memorize all the moves. Didn't end well for him.

Chess engines like Stockfish and AlphaZero have indeed changed how the game is approached. They can calculate and evaluate positions far beyond human capacity, which can make human games feel predetermined and less mysterious.

Da_KnightMare

I am sorry you feel that way. Is there anything else I can assist you with?

Another epic fail by ChatGPT.

#1 I realize what you mean... I felt the same way when I was that rating... Half the moves are just random. I would suggest taking a break
