- well in my tournament game - my opponent to the best of my knowledge has not made a mistake yet - or at least one I saw - so he is two pawns up in the end game so I guess I will get whumped - but I chose to remember the words of that famous American General - the one who said, " I have not yet begun to panick! " then he panicked

when I play black, I am happy that I decide the opening, French, sicilian, centre counter, carokhan etc. etc. Here is a request all players: if you find a biginner advice him to play black 100 games and then white 50 games. And my request to Mr. brettregan1   :   please start playing only black for a month in chess.com and analyse it with the opponent. No need to get help of super rated players

I wouldn't say I'm good, but for now I enjoy playing black considerably more than white.  I especially like to win as black.

i like playing black as much as white. it is the game at the end of the day

Playing white may offer an advantage of the first move...but black has the choice of deciding which defence to show...as already indicated, at our level mistakes are common...so I don't think it is really that important...more important would be the level of understanding one has reached...

Besides what I've already said, I would add the obvious.

Chess, as in physical battle, is an interplay of both offense and defense. Playing black...avoidance of which is not an option, anyway...helps one to balance what might otherwise be overly offensive-only skills.

When I was young and studied karate...or as a boy in a street fight...I learned that it is just as important to know how to block a blow as it is to serve one. (That's one reason why at my age I still have all my teeth!!!) Laughing

It's psychological.  Focus on tactics, not playing for traps, and assuming your opponent will find good moves (look as hard for your opponent's good moves as you do for your own).  Chess at your (and my) level has more to do with being able to ignore bad moves and little to do with what color your are, if you prefer bishops to knights or any other such silly thing.

Playing black has its advantages if your opponent is more or less of equal strength, in so much as a draw is a satisfactory result while a win is more than a satisfactory result. In other words there is no pressure on black what so ever. For white on the other hand (in the now famous words of the celebrated T.V. soccer pundit Alan Hansen), "First is first, second is nowhere."

I always play e4 except when I play black, then I might play something else depending on what white plays.

I prefer to play black against 1.e4 thanks to the sicilian.  I hate playing black against 1.d4 because I haven't found a defense that suits me yet.
