I hate winning by default

I find it frustrating when I'm having an interesting double edged game with a roughly equal player and then, just as the position gets interesting, my opponent's connection craps out. No fun to win rating points that way.

ameraljic

Resign then. Problem solved Laughing

patzermike

No fun to LOSE rating points that way either. :)

If I have a choice between gaining rating points and losing them, I'd take gaining them every time Smile.

patzermike

Rating points only have value when you won a good game. Otherwise we should just ask chess.com to double our ratings. It's like the old joke that you feel better about your manhood if you measure in centimetres rather than inches because you get a bigger number. :)

adamplenty

Well, it's better than losing them undeservedly.

Rating points do NOT have value.

It only reflects results. No gain in rating is permanent. If you gain 10  points in a disconnect game, they're absorbed back within a few games. It's really not as if Carlsen would have been 2900 already if he won 3 forfeited games in 2009.

The point of points is points!!!  Get them, cherish them, keep them!  I long for more!

patzermike

Well, I guess I do prefer gaining rather than losing points because random electromagnetic gremlins interfere with internet connection, but it is more satisfying to win fair and square against an opponent so played well too.

marcosite

'ratings points do not have value'?  They do, especially if you have very few.

Agree.  Everyone is out for your points so stay alert! And it's satisfying to see a rating rise, good game or otherwise. I think.

Wait for a game where you completely crush your opponent, and just as the checkmate comes closer, your opponent's connection craps out.

It's even more fun.

patzermike

Yes. But horrible if YOUR connection craps out just before delivering the death blow.

marcosite

That would wind me right up patzermike. But I try to remember it's just a game...

Gawwd ! Bet lots of you dudes have never played chess Mano v Mano , across a board.

Actually I miss the physical board.  On line is good, watches for rules, entices me with points & so on,  but miss the actual  board.

marcosite

Most people don't do any of that in polite company! But still think points are points.

marcosite

I try.

Winning by default? Imagine how Karpov felt.....

patzermike

Lol! Perhaps Karpov had mixed feelings. Though a bit relieved. I really don't hold to the view that Bobby would have definitely won. Probably, but his psychogical equilibrium was hanging by a thread.
