White to move.
White can mate black in two moves.  What are white's two moves - in the correct order?
a) Bg6 and Bxf7
b) Bf6 and Bh7
c) Bf6 and Rh8
d) Bh7 and Bf6

This problem came up on one of my uil tests that my students are taking.  It appears to me that both c and d are correct.  There should only be one correct answer.  What am I missing?  The answer key says that D is the correct answer.  Any help?

c) Bf6 is met with a check, for example Qe6+. Bye bye mate in 2.

d) Bh7 is a check and is a forced mate in 2.

The problem is Bf6 isn't a check, so black gets to move.

So... black's going to attack's white's king.  If it moves to the d file Qd5+ picks up the rook on h1.

If it moves to the f file Qe2+ is close to mate.

In any case it certainly isn't a mate in 2 anymore.

This is actually a good example for students.  In tactics try to play the most forcing sequence.  Sometimes (like here) it's the difference between a win and a loss.

Thanks wafflemaster.  I don't know why I wasn't thinking to move the queen to put white in check.  Usually it is not enough coffee, today I might have had too much.  Embarassed  Appreciated.

yeah agreed. white has to force mate. Bf6 re8+ and black has the initiative and could even if nessicary sac the queen for the h rook with an easy win. but that is hardly nessicary

d)

I actually put the white king in the wrong place.  It should have been on c1 but the answer would still be d).
