I'm new, I don't know what to do with my hands!

Basically brand new to this game. I know how to move each piece, the basic pretense of the game and how to set up a basic defense/ control of the center. I have tried those beginner tactics apps and I looked through Laster's tactic book (something about short, violent games). I'm still really lost. I really want to play this game, but I really don't know what I am doing. Where the apps confuse me because they don't explain anything.
Can someone help me?
