I've wasted, off and on, 40 years of my life playing chess. If I can waste another 40 years (or more), I'll die a happy person.

If you had no aspirations, simply playing is a good way to spend the time. But if you, like me, had aspirations and not the discipline to actually work on your goals, than yeah, the time has been wasted indeed!

I hope you're just being sarcastic, LOL!

if you played and study for 20 years and didnt improve, you did it wrong. i started at 950 5 years ago and went over 2000 this year, playing and studying sporadically. its surely possible to go 950-2200 in 5 years if some structure is applied to the practice.

Indeed, I have not have any consistency in studying and I barely studied. I understand that it is entirely my fault.

I'm glad you're laughing. It extends life expectancy. But no, I'm not. I haven't been sarcastic this past decade, in that respect.

That being said, he is blocked. I'm busy uplifting others and not tearing them down.

What a goofball thing for him to say.

I remember a clip of Karpov saying that. In a way it's an odd thing to say; on the other hand, he is right. Chess is something that can bring an ultimate satisfaction. For those of us who get hooked on it, there's nothing better! happy.png

In a way, Karpov was right since chess can bring the ultimate satisfaction. However, we are at risk of going back to the dreaded PHILOSOPHY!

You should take your own advice. Name calling is not classy.

So I played about 25 blitz games last night... And although I improved my overall rating a good bit by winning about twice as many games as losing... I can say that I still made a lot of ridiculous blunders. It is clear to me that just by mostly playing one cannot improve beyond a certain level. I mean, sure, maybe I may cross into the 1800 area, and who knows, maybe even 1900. But, unless there is a systematic learning effort it is extremely unlikely that I will make a sustained progress. A tremendous studying effort is an absolute must!

Chess is not an easy game to master. The more I learn, the more I realize just how much more I need to learn. With every step, my appreciation of the game grows. I hope that I will take all the necessary steps to improve and that I am not too old to make a breakthrough!

No. I realized that I have been extremely wasteful of my time when it comes to improving my chess. I do play a good game on a rare occasion, which tells me that I do have some potential. Yet, at the same time, I have NOT been consistent. This is why the vast majority of my games are simply garbage... Only once in a while I play good. Today I played a decent game against a 1600 player on another site. But for every good game I play at least 10 that are bad... Sometimes 100. Here's the relatively good game...

Also, I must say, chess is something special. Videogames you can outgrow, but chess is infinitely more interesting. At least, this is how I feel and I don't think I can ever outgrow chess.

Thank you. Hopefully, if all goes well, I will learn to play well on a consistent basis. I hope that the next decade will be one of efficient time management and better results. Chess is definitely a worthwhile endeavor for me and I am willing to commit to it. Evolution is what counts.
