Anatoly Karpov is a Multi-Billionaire ! (....just joking John....Smile....)

tomy_gun

Anadolly Karpov has gained the fruits of his run-challenge!

May I venture some not-too-controversial hypotheses about the Non-High IQ factors that often contribute to the success of any individual seeking to amass an obscene amount of wealth?

1)  Be born into a wealthy family.

2)  Attend colleges or universities where you will automatically "make connections" with wealthy classmates -- those who will later have power and useful "insider" information.

3)  Enjoy the personal freedom one experiences automatically when one is blessed with a moderate to high degree of sociopathy.

(Hope that doesn't sound too cynical... please, continue your discussion. :-) )

johnmusacha

Element #2 is not "automatic."  One still has to make the requisite effort to make friends, maintain reputation, keep up appearances, etc.

It's not like you're sitting in your dorm room one day playing World of Warcraft and John Paul Getty the Ninth walks in with John J. Astor the Fourteenth and says hey man let's go have a beer, brah!

Completely agree with first two points.  I know nothing about sociopathey though ...

You make a good point, musacha.  None of the above factors can automatically guarantee the rapid accumulation of nauseatingly extensive piles of wealth.  Ambition, work, willingness to sleep one's way to the top if necessary -- so many pieces of the puzzle must be combined before one can rule the world -- er -- I mean "make a comfortable living."

johnmusacha

Well, what I meant was attending a prestigious college or university alone doesn't "automatically" mean one will make connections with the scions of powerful old money families.  These things still take social effort and a bit of luck.  One still has to get out and meet people, go to parties, talk to dorm mates, class mates, maybe join a few clubs or a frat.  It's far from automatic, especially if you are an outsider to that world (i.e. not having attended the best boarding or prep schools beforehand).

I wonder if the "Karpov is a billionaire" kid is going to be repeating his idiocy in six months again, as if nobody had cast doubt on his shoddy source and lack of critical thinking skills.

ex0tica

Easy! Money does not mean intelligence. Smart people does not need only money.

johnmusacha

Instead of defending his sources and rumor-mongering about Karpov, this is what the kid had to say in response:

"Actually, Karpov is not a billionaire.

In fact, this is just an evil rumor being spread by the CIA to discredit johnmuscha.

You see, they feel threatened by his superior intellect, but they are too stupid to realize thst is the real reaon theyhate him.

(My work here is through. Let the wall-bouncing begin, I'll be back in a few weeks to give you another nudge.)"

Fail!

"1)  Be born into a wealthy family."

I think this is the main factor for be millionari. Of course, they are poor people who makes millions and rich people who loses all millions. However in my opinion (I don't have statistical data) likely this cases are les than 1%.

A great change in the social position is more the exception than the rule

I wonder if that kid is going to come back to defend his ridiculous reliance on blogs and another shady "sources".

Any idiot can close his eyes, shake a stick at any source that's thrown at him, and say "That's unreliable!" without providing any other source I couldn't shake a stick at and say the same thing. That doesn't refute the source. It is simply a placeholder in lieu of a valid arguement.

You made a claim, you have the burden of proof.

The standard of proof is set by the skeptic.  In a public forum you can choose to either strive to meet that standard, or disregard it and provide whatever sources you choose (or not provide any) and be subject to further public skepticism (as is the case here, with your sources being called into question).

Instead of bolstering your claim with more reliable sources, you deflect with a call for sources to the contrary instead -- what would you suggest the standard of proof be for proving that Karpov is not a billionaire?  What sources could possibly satisfy you to this end.

In conclusion, that kid insistently claiming that Karpov is a "billionaire" got OWNED.

Then I got "blocked from this user's notes!"

Anatoly Karpov (world champ 1975-1985): A man with cold reptilian eyes. A look from him can freeze you to death over the board. An almost electronic voice emanating from his vocal chords. A python-like chess style, once he has you, he has you. The greatest defensive player of all time. A communist.  Politically, the most powerful Soviet chess player ever. He wined and dined with the politiburo big wigs regularly. He had access to an exclusive government dacha on the outskirts of Moscow. Rumours suggest he ordered the assassination of Leonid Stein because Leonid Stein was a threat to his success in the 1973-74 candidates cycle. Viktor Korchnoi claimed Karpov and his people had a plot to finish him off had he won the 1978 World Championship match held in the notorious Baguio City. A corrupt man. He bribed Kasparov’s team left, right and center in order to make them divulge confidential opening preparation. Now an elected politician serving in Putin’s government. He owns a gas field in Siberia, has one of the largest collections of stamps, and is rumoured to be an undercover billionaire.
