Hi Everyone....

If you won every recognized tournament game, starting at the very bottom of the ladder, then how long do you think it would take to be awarded a FIDE Grandmaster title ?

....and how would you plan out for this attempt ?

I think about three years. As to planning it ?....I have no idea....ideas ?

I'm working on a USA-based mock-up plan/schedule as I speak right now....Smile....

The more realistic plan would be to not lose....with a minimum of 80% win rate and 20% draw rate. This should win you 1st place (or at least tie for) in every sanctioned tournament you enter.

yeah then you just have to win all the games

depends on how many tournaments you play.

Depends on which tournaments you enter.

You can win 1 tournament and get the title.

You can 10,000 tournaments and not get the title.

Then I feel it's all in the scheduling....trying to do it as swiftly as possible.

Yes, but you'll hafta get into those bigger tournaments....which could be tuffer as you go up....and can FIDE keep denying a rising star from entry ?

FIDE does what it wants heh.

But to keep a rising star from playing they would probably need a good reason... you know, like if aliens told Ilyumzhinov it was a good idea.

(L18) FIDE does what it wants heh.

ahhh yes....and that could be a person's biggest obstacle.

Challenge the Grandmaster to a tournament(you don't need any certification) , as you win, you'll be grandmaster. And that's all there is to it

On a more serious note, IIIRC GM Ronen Har-Zvi said he got the title in... less than 300 games? Maybe it was just after 300 games.

What if... scenarios are obviously only dreaming, but if you really wanted to make it as quickly as possible to GM then you should start with an open tournament that also has a lot of GMs playing in it.

I am not a fan of Millionaire Chess, but if you really could win every game you play then this would be a great point to start in the open section. Lots of strong players to beat and a good amount of mones to earn.

Then again going into it with the firm belief you will win every single game will probably get you caught cheating in game 1.

Avatar of greenfreeze

you have to play lots of games

Exactly 27 games as that's the minimum FIDE requirement (assuming you go the norms route).

If you chose the right tournament, you could get a GM title after only one tournament!

Kramnik jumped from FM to GM due to the result of one event , an Olympiad in which he had a fantastic result .  He was never IM but was over 2600 as an FM !  LOL

Avatar of TheOldReb

I played an FM rated over 2500 in a tourney in Portugal years ago , he beat me like a rented mule !  He tied for first in the event with GM Spraggett , drawing their individual game and he soon made GM ...

Avatar of ponz111

I had bad luck not to make GM [as usual for me].
