If ratings didn't exist, would you still study and play chess as much as you do?

DrSpudnik

Probably. The rating is only a feedback measure to see how well you're doing.

rooperi

If ratings didnt exist, someone would invent them

Cybrax

Hell yes, remember the ratings system only applies to mainstream basic chess and there in fact several advanced variations of the game.

dark_knight_0

Isn´t chess about developing reason, logical tactics and intelligence? This predates and it is more pressing than ratings. Hell yeah.

beardogjones

No. Ratings are money and with money I will become Fide president.

RubiksRevenge

Ratings let you find opponents of a level that you wish to play, also it is my little excuse to gamble without money. Can't imagine what chess would be like with no ratings probably like a ladder system would exist, but no ratings would mean tournaments would have to be longer to sort out the deserving winner.

trysts

Yes, I would play as much as I do without ratings, but if computers didn't exist I doubt that I would have played a hundred chess games in my whole life:)

richb8888

I think so, but you need ratings to gauge where you are at in the game.

samtoyousir

I wouldn't be playing because they're wouldnt be any orignization in chess at all. It's kind of a hard question becasue if we didnt have ratings, tournaments and online would be crappy. Chess, IMHO would probably have died out. But rating systems are inevitable. No matter what something would show up, othewise the game would die.

Eclipse451

All true. But personally, I don't care about numbers. I do like winning though. Probably stems from a lack of physical prowess, but that's OK. Colt made all men equal in that way.

einstein99

How do csehs pceies mvoe?

Ubik42

In some ways ratings take some of the fun out of the game. There is a lot less guesswork involved in deciding if you are better than player X (or if magnus is better than vishy).

In my upcoming club games, i would be thinking about the players reputation, or his previous games against me, instead of looking at their rating and saying "my chance to win is exactly 29.7%".

einstein99

Is that 29.7% a rounding error?

EDB123

It's an error of exactly 30%.

I_Am_Second

Absolutely...

nameno1had

I think I would but, might be more apt to say screw it in a game from time to time and just resign. However, those are probably games I will lose anyway. I think I have still won a few of those and drew a few others, so perhaps it was worth it...?

In other words, I don't always feeling like trying as hard as I end up trying and the ratings are a motivator to me. My love of the game motivates me to play it. Wanting to know how good I can get, motivates me to try harder. Ironically, beating the other guy, never plays into very much. I play the position, not my opponent.

iMacChess

The first modern rating system wasn't used until about 1939 and Chess players did okay before the rating system started. I would have no problem adjusting to have no rating. I would play for the love of the game...
