which, chess or highlghted backgrounds?
If ratings didn't exist, would you still study and play chess as much as you do?

which, chess or highlghted backgrounds?
When you get a title, you can get red lettered title initials before your user name and your comments get a pink background. Elitism!!

the answer is...
NO.
Interesting... the only titled player to post so far said no... in big lettters!

if there is no rating you might always get stuck playing 3 hour games with someone who would be like... 900 rating. If you lucky you might get a really good player.
If there was no ratings, say good buy to competitive chess.
And to answer you question.
NO.

Ratings are a lot of fun. It's far more satisfying to beat someone with a higher rating than myself, than to crush someone with a low one. It's a good statistical indicator of where you are on the Chess hierarchy. Without them, anarchy would ensue.

I played and enjoyed chess long before I ever had a rating.
Having a rating has only added a new dimension to my enjoyment because now I understand that goals in improvement can be set and reached.

I get what your saying on this. Ratings make it personal. Example... I had 1500 points and lost 50, all I wanted to do was get my points back to 1500 but I also wanted to sleep, I ignored that and played until I got the points, this happens often... So my answer is no defiantly not, I love competition and that's what I think ratings resemble :)

Competitive spirit is a great asset in chess.
However, it might be helpful if you look at ratings not as a goal, but as a reflection of your progress.
This way you can focus that competitive spirit more appropriately on individual games rather than your ongoing ever present rating.
You might also get more sleep which will lead to more energy for kissing pretty girls.
yes it's fun
