Maybe this has been already discused on this forum, but anyway....i have found ebook titled The begginers game in which the author claims that he invented the optimal way of playing chess...one of the greatest discoveries at all,not only in chess. Those are his own words.Even if you hate chess, you will learn the basic principles of this system in a few minutes,if you devote only couple of hours to it,you will be almost like a GM.He stated, that he played hundreds of games against the strongest engines, winning most of the games, drawing the others.I tried it against the easiest level of shredder chess...and got crushed. If you are interested, here is the link, where you can download this book for free,

I've just had a look at it  - it recommends a hedgehog-y opening set-up, with both bishops fianchettoed, pawns on b3, d3, e3 and g3, and knights on e2 and d2 (or the corresponding squares for B). If you wanted to give it a name, it would be a double fianchetto opening, or a variant in the Modern Defence, or something.

Fair enough, if you like that sort of thing, and I've played people who do. But it's (of course) noteworthy that the annotated games have a lot of things like 'and went on to win the R+p ending' or 'and then developed a strong attack'. Yeah - there's no way round this one; sooner or later you have to start thinking.

'The Beginners Game' is playing the Hippopotamus setup as white or black. According to the book, it's going to come to dominate the GM scene and the top programs will adopt it as the strongest or even only way to play chess in the opening.

Are you saying that actualy it is something on that?I really didnt study it closely, but i had a feeling that is it just bla bla.Well, maybe i am wrong. Is it worth to try it again?

The Hippopotamus, I was always told it was weak 900 tackle!?

Hardly, Boris Spassky played it in the 1966 World Championship match against Petrosian! Wink

I've read it, played it, and I was absolutely terrible. After the first few moves I was completely stuck. Maybe it works for some people, but I can't stand playing it.

Seems to work decent against computers. I beat some of the 2100+ personas on Chessmaster XI with it. Although the engine non-handicapped mated me on move 24, but that is an inevitability for me at my level now anyway.

I might play this as Black occasionally to experiment. I don't think I would as white though.

It's a pitty you have to wade through what seems like an exceptionally long post by cheater/teacher_1 to finally find the meat of it -- and big surprise, it's not new, it's a common opening used in blitz to save time esp. against computers, I saw this years ago.  I can't imagine how they think of this as a tool for improvement lol Smile
