If You Could Change One Rule In Chess, What Would It Be?

Early on in my chess career I had the following position (as White). I had played 21.Qe4 and after my opponents reply I triumphantly picked up my queen and ‘mated’ on h7. At this point my opponent pointed out I was in check from the rook on g8. Sheepishly I took my move back and played 22.Kf1. A few moves later I finished with a real (legal) checkmate, but as we shook hands I realised I had broken the touch move rule.

Instead of 22.Kf1 I was obligated to play 22.Qg4, as I had deliberately touched my Queen. This would have turned a win into a loss. Not quite sure how to handle the situation (it was a local club game where players only involved an arbiter as a last resort) I explained what I had done to my opponent and suggested the game be recorded as a draw (which it was). However even today I still feel that I scored half a point more than I should have.

The game isn’t perfect for sure. I think it can amount to more

Online: Opponents should only be allowed to offer a draw every 20 moves.

Offline: When players are tied for a classical tournament win, the tie break games should be Chess960 in the same time control, not speed chess.

I would make chess exclusive for men. Women are too stupid to be allowed to play this game.

I came here to play chess. Unfortunately it's impossible with so many cheaters around so chess.com GO F-K YOURSELVES!!!

How do you know if people are cheating or not? Most people here are probably not cheaters (because what is the point?), so why worry about it? Just have fun and enjoy the game happy.png

OK, maybe you can have fun playing chess.

I haven't had fun in playing for a long time. Especially because my chess shape is very unstable. One day I have a winning streak of say 8 games, next day a losing streak of 10 games. It's not statistically possible to lose 8 games in a row so cheating must play a role here. That's why I'm extremely frustrated, disappointed, bitter and angry.

You know your just gonna get banned right ? People are going to report you for being abusive honestly why do this on chess.com

I lost ten games in a row once it happens ,I also got a steak of ten once the more games you play the more likely you will get in probable streaks ,so no hats just unusual but it isn't unlikey to happen what you expect to win 50 percent of all your games lmao

Regarding streaks of winning and losing there are many reasons that happens to many players.
For one thing as you win the opponents you are paired with are stronger - or they are studying your play if you beat them or both.
And as you lose there is a psychological carryover and impatience causing more losses.
And if the only way to shake loss is to keep playing till you win then you'll likely be playing tired - which will cause even more losses.

Regarding your statement about men and women - I don't believe you.
You were just trying to be funny.

Of course, I didn't really mean what I said about women. I was furious after another loss and lashed out without thinking.

So Noemi, BigChessPlayer I apologize, for what it is worth.

That's an intriguing idea! I understand your reasoning behind introducing a "pass move" option, but I see your point about the limitation of only once per game. It does seem a bit arbitrary to allow it only once but not twice.

To me, the logic behind the "once per game" limitation would be to prevent players from constantly passing and stalling, which could lead to a draw or a lack of progress in the game. However, I can see how this limitation could be frustrating if a player is in a situation where they need to pass again to regroup or reassess their strategy.

And you make a great point about stalemate essentially being a "pass" rule! Stalemate is indeed a situation where neither player can move without putting themselves in a worse position, so they effectively "pass" and the game ends in a draw.

If I had to modify your proposed rule, I might suggest allowing a "pass move" option only in specific situations, like when a player is in a stalemate-like position or when their king is not under attack. That way, it would add a new layer of strategy to the game without allowing players to abuse the "pass" option. What do you think?

This would also enforce any hidden devices rule.

what about the haplodrome or whatever it was called, the one where you have to run 400m in a soldier's armor?

Not during a heat wave.

All kinds of crazy rules possible.
How about:
'You can take your opponent's b-pawn off the board at any time ...
but only at Night on Tuesdays. And only if it rained the previous Tuesday.'
JK.

Kings can kill kings and can move a maximum of 2 spaces in any direction and can castle even if already moved, and choose between who goes first(Black or white).
