Getting good (but not great) at chess will teach you a way of thinking about things, a way of approaching problems, that will be incredibly useful in other aspects of your life.  I would encourage you to take up the game and put some time in it, but stop once you get into college.

If you are starting something at age 13 with the goal of making it your career, do not choose chess.

What about Microsoft then?

Yes it's too late.

Let me ask you: If someone says I'm 13 and I just started playing basketball, can I get into the NBA? Or if they say: I'm 13 and I only started football, can I get into premier league?

The answer is obviously no.

So it's same with becoming a chess grandmaster. So I'm sorry, but I would blame your parents for not starting you sooner in chess.

What? It's not like it's a requirement to be young to be a GM, you can become a grandmaster at any age, not just young. Anyone that tells you you're too old(???) to be a grandmaster is wrong and an idiot.

How many people have the natural talent to be a gm?  Oh yes, this includes the ability to go through the mind numbing training.

if you enjoy chess I recommend keeping it as a hobby. you can continue playing in tournaments and going to chess clubs as an adult if you maintain a stable career in another field. what you need to understand is that even for chess "professionals" it can be hard to make enough money to have a comfortable life (unless you are ranked in the top 50 in the world, you will need to be a chess author, trainer, or streamer to make anything at all). the amount of work and time it takes, not to mention the setbacks you will likely face, on the mission of becoming a GM is monumental compared to choosing a "normal" job like programming, engineering, medicine, or law. you will also be a lot richer doing those careers than focusing entirely on chess.

I vaguely recall some GM mentioned “Burning Desire”. So if you have the  burning desire and natural talent to be a GM,it’s possible you will become GM at any age. But it’s still more difficult than starting at a younger age. Did one GM started to play chess at age 12 and achieved GM at age 22?

Yeah, Seirawan started playing chess at 12 and made GM around age 20 or 21.

That’s very impressive 👍

Shankland did not start playing competitive chess until he was 11.  It took him about 9 years to earn the GM title (at age 20).

The issue is not so much age itself, but the desire combined with leisure time.  Adults will often have the desire (and even discipline), but due to other responsibilities, they have much less leisure time they can devote to a hobby.  Kids are information sponges with a lot of free time.  If they get obsessed with a hobby that is easy to practice in their free time, they can progress at insane rates.
