I'm not very good. My rating is only X.

Gees! I'm hearing some downright mean and nasty talk, definitely not the guys I would spend 4 hours playing a round of golf with. Far too grumpy.

Stay grumpy and let your crummy chess clubs stay small, even shrink.  Don't grow the game of chess. Keep all the children and moms far, far away. Who needs beautiful women hanging around a chess club anyway? Why bother to bring your son to a tournament?  Keep him at home to rot away playing mindless video games.

Yep. Let the game of chess die in your selfish little minds.

BTW, how could I possibly screw up your tournament? I'm a nice guy.   I know the rules. I would never yell CHECK! That's just stupid.

Most here have seen my U1000 Live Chess games posted. Would you tell me to go home if I showed up to your tournament?

I agree. Any idiot who's even read the rules should know that if some fool keeps yelling CHECK, CHECK, CHECK over, and over they can be made to forfeit the game, so I don't think it would be much of a problem.

Yes. The rules are far easier to understand than the game.

Well, heinzie won't let me play in his chess tournament. Oh well, I won't let him play in my golf tournament, nor my annual yo-yo tournament.

I think being good with a yo-yo would be a lot of fun.

Don't shortchange yourself, OP. You are as good as you feel. Your rating is only a snapshot of your performance on the chessboard at any given time, not a reflection of your intelligence. Keep playing and enjoying the game. Ratings will come later. Study and analyze your games. Have a mentor or a friend guide you through the meanders of the game of chess. Most of all, keep your chin up and have fun.

I completly agree. I coach chess at the middle school level and among the things I teach them is to appreciate and enjoy the ride.... of learning and playing this great game... no matter what your level.

You really have a yo-yo tournament?

Does it have a web page?

Thanks so much..

Interesting thread... Thing is, sometimes those of us whose ratings aren't as high as we would like DO feel somewhat defined by those blasted numbers. Granted they aren't set in stone but they sure do have the ability to make you feel somewhat self conscious, at least I know they do for me at times.

I am at that common level of 1550 rating and unfortunately I know enough to know how terrible my chess really is. last game I played my opponent offered me his rook for my bishop I wouldnt take his offer because I thought I needed the Bishop to stop a checkmate threat .It turns out I should have accepted his kind offer .Same with the game 2 weeks before this 1 my opponent sacked his bishop for my H pawn and all I had to do was move my queen to a position to cover H7 and if I found that move it was an easy win. This is a common thing for me not finding the correct defence . I am not sure how this is going to change I am 42 so its hard to stop those blunders to make matters worse those guys that I lost to were about 70 years of age maybe its time to apologise to those guys for not beating them and giving them a false sense of security that they are good when they only beat a rotten player . How many more years of useful chess life do I have . I thought you were finished at 50 .

It might be a common rating, but I can't get my rating up to yours to save my sole from hell!  Yell

If you want to get better at defence (and offence), start with the basiscs and take your time for every move. And solve the daily puzzles. (if you want to practice the basics, try chess tutor. Easy to understand and plenty of practice)

fanger2000

Thanks planet and timvl . How true that is sometimes you need to go back to the basics when I was winning I was often in time trouble and would win with less than 5 minutes left now I am losing with an hour to spare. I do some puzzles but my puzzle strength is about 150 points stronger than my rating .chess tutors did work before but I might be not match fit I have played 3 rated games in 4 months but done alot of online chess and some puzzles . The point might be that you can practice your cricket in the nets all day long but once you are out in the middle its a total different ball game
