No. Because it seems many have unrealistic expectations. I have been playing 3 years and have yet to break 900. My rating has dropped almost 300 over the last few months. I don't get it.

So I have been stuck at around 1350-1400 blitz/rapid for what feels like eternity. It’s my dream to achieve the GM title one day, but I feel like I am doing things wrong. I am very good at puzzles, and I find most tactics in games. I feel though, that my middle game/engame need some work. What should I be studying to get to 1600?. Any tips and/or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.
Hey there, I have some advice. Truth is your real strength 100-200 points above your actual rating, however that true strength can't be achieved without focus. If you can focus on your games, you'll notice yourself doing much better than normal. Emotion can also affect your performance and it happens to me too, avoid playing chess if you've had a bad day as it WILL decrease your performance. When I have a good day I can beat 1900-2000 rated players easily, however if my day was bad I struggle against 1500 rated players. Sleep is also important, try getting 8 hours of sleep a day it may sound cheesy but you will notice a difference in performance. Overall, play in an environment that you can focus in on a good day with an abundance of rest.

The truth is the there's no way to get unstuck. You have to keep following your training schedule and hope that someday you break the wall. I have come to understand this and that's why I don't ask anybody for any advice because there's none.

You could instead memorize reasoning behind certain lines, which will let you find those lines without needing to memorize them.

It's often just more efficient to understand than memorize, unless it's very sharp tactical theory that needs to be navigated well, or solved endgames you need to know how to convert (although even for those, you can often convert them on principle alone, and memorize only a few key positions)

6. Dont mean to be mean, but you wont become a GM. If you were that good, you wouldn't be asking on here for help

unfortunately for aspiring grandmasters, this tends to be true (like, always.)

I have been wondering about this too. I recently had my rating drop from 2000 down to 1800. Tiredness was the main reason.

But for some reason, I kept meeting 1700 level players who were putting in 90% accuracy or higher. I was SURE they were all cheating. But here is the thing: I have realized that because I have been so tired, I have been making little errors in the opening, and once you make just one error, it is so much easier for your opponent to be accurate. One bad move leads to more bad moves, and for your opponent the best moves are easier to see.

That said, I have been refunded points FOUR times in the last 2 weeks by chess.com due to the fair play policy.

Added to that, I really do think that there are plenty of people out there who use opening explorers to get through the opening 10-20 moves, and that is definitely a form of cheating, and it is a type that chess.com cant really detect.

Sorry to shatter your dream, you will never be a GM. Just enjoy your chess, don't get hung up on the rating, there will always be better and worse players out there.

Indeed. There are kids under the age of TEN with ratings over 2000. One of them just beat Gotham!

May I ask why? You know nothing about me, my dedication in chess, or how hard I will push to achieve my goals in life. Although your comment was ignorant and unnecessary, I won’t let your opinions on my dream affect how hard I will push to get there. I noticed a lot of people in this forum were telling me that I will never get the GM title, instead of giving me advice on how to improve. If you dont want to share or have nothing to share about chess improvement, than do not post your opinions about your doubts of my improvement. I posted here because I thought people would be supportive (which some people are),and I really REALLY want to improve, but I now realize that this is not the best place for advice on learning. Thank you to all that posted helpful and kind messages, but for the people who came here just to tell me that I wouldn’t achieve my goal, do better. Seriously.

I gave you some tips, but chess is a logical game and GM is basically genius level people. They are top players (over 2000) when they are EIGHT. No amount of hard work will just make that happen. People say that you wont be a GM (even an IM is unbelievably hard) not out of malice but to give you the honest truth

No one is trying to put you down about your goals. Chess I an EXTREMELY difficult game to master. And grandmasters are usually on that path before they hit their teens. There are so few people who have achieved any kind of title after learning chess late in life, much less the GM title. We are not trying to be discouraging towards you, but rather we are trying to help you see your goals with some sense of realism. Grandmasters are the geniuses of the game. The ones to whom the game comes naturally and not just through hard work alone. Because hard work will carry you further than you currently are, but becoming a GM .. unless you're under 10 years old, are recognized as a potential prodigy, and already cycling through tournaments in pursuit of certain titles, it's just not going to happen. I'm sorry if that's a hard pill to swallow, but you'll have to eventually.

I wish you all the best on your chess journey and I tell you what, if you ever become a gm, I will wear a pink tutu, a curly blonde wig, a twinkling crown, while dancing to the star spangled banner carrying a sign saying " I was wrong. He's a GM now. ". Onus is on you to make it happen.

Good luck, bud.

Well said. A respectful comment.

Thing is, I bet many people on here play a lot of chess and know what is required to reach 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000, 3500 (which is what a GM is). It took my many years to reach 2000 and that is just on here, not OTB. So if you want realistic advice, it has to include the idea that GM is not gonna happen.

Even IM, I would be interested to know how many of them reached it just through hard work. FM... well maybe!

So many things wrong with this...

First of all 2000 isn't a top player.

Secondly, Carlsen was a beginner at 8 years old.

Third. Top GM is very different from low level GM. Svidler and Firouzja agreed that the GM title is "a good goal for amateurs," but not for top players like them who had higher goals such as the world champion title.

"Top" player is subjective so you cant say it is wrong.

This liitle kid (link below) just beat Gotham (one of the worlds biggest chess streamers) . If that isnt a "top" player I dont know what it is. But even then, it is totally subjective.

Even a player as hapless as me can claim to be in the top 99.8% percentile

what is the world coming to, hahaha. People are just terrible.

Avatar of ChrisZifo

"Top" is a subjective word. You really cant argue that.

"The top" chess player is less subjective- nearly everyone will say Magnus Carlsen.

You are welcome to say what your definition is of "top" chess player is

Avatar of ChrisZifo

hahahahappy ..What a funny person! You merely have to say what your definition of a top player is, Top 10, Top 100. Or maybe "top" for you means only the no 1 player.
