If you know the piece values (9,5,3,3,1), opening principals, and basic checkmates (like Q+K vs K) then you know enough to start playing a lot. Live games, maybe 20 or 30 minutes (meaning each player has that much time, so the game could last 40 or 60 minutes total).

You'll lose a lot in the beginning, but that's how everyone starts out. You need to play to get used to how the pieces interact on the board, and trying to visualize one or two moves ahead.

Ideally you play a few games every day, don't just read and watch videos, you need to play. Of course not everyone has the time, so maybe you'll play a few games a week.

But for a totally new player, if someone asked, "I can only do one, either play or study, which should I do?" definitely play. Play 100 games, get used to all the rules and how the game works at a basic level.
