Which time control is faster: 3/2 or 5/0.

How do they calculate these things?

Unhygienix

5 minutes because it takes 60 moves to make a 3/2 into 5 minutes but I prefer a 3/2 because it has an increment

Unhygienix

I have no idea how they calculate these things but I prefer a 3/2.(-:

They're equal at 60 moves.

Well, not to go over your head too much, but I think they calculate it as 2 seconds per move.

lol.

In other words it doesn't matter.

But FWIW I think they use 40 moves, which is roughly the average length of a game. IOW 3|2 is faster.

(Especially for lower ratings. I think I calculated an average of 35 moves per game.)

It would be hard to determine the average length of a game

Yeah, I mean, what kind of advanced mathematics degree would be required to calculate an average?

And even if you knew how, just imagine the hardware and time required. You'd have to be financed by Bezos himself.

And even if you had the education, the computing power, and the decades, you might not have the data... I mean who has access to thousands or millions of chess games?

So I guess the world will never know what the average length of a game is.

You're 12 years old.

No one cares.

basically chess can be played in short games and in long games and in very very long games. It is just different ways to play the game since the whole strategy changes. There is nothing to be calculated, 3/2 and 5/0 are just different ways to play rapid chess. Since the increments can make a 3/2 longer than a 5/0 I would agree to say that 5/0 is the faster option. The thing is that a game with increments makes the strategy of time management different. I don't know if i understand your doubt correctly.

taticamagica

But i also think that the average duration of both 3/2 and 5/0 should be very similar

yeas, it can be faster and it can be slower
