Hello fellow chess players,

FIDE's website provides data of all affiliated players. I have made an exploratory data analysis of these players in order to get some insights. The data refers to the period of August 2020.

I have made it public on Kaggle. It counts with a lot of interactive plots, so I recommend accessing the link for a better visual experience. Anyway, here is a short list of what I have seen:

1. In August 2020, FIDE had nearly a million affiliated players (977,687 to be exact), where 2 out of 10 players are from India or Russia.

2. The mean age is 28.58 for active players, and 37.96 for the inactive ones.

3. The majority of rated players have a rating between 1400 and 1999.

4. 98.03% of the players are untitled. Russia has the most number of GMs, followed by Germany and USA.

5. Only 14.8% of all players are women, but they represent only 2.15% of all GMs.

6. Cuba has the highest average rating in the world (considering ALL rated players and the standard game mode).

7. Gukesh D, 14, is the youngest ranked player, while Robert Huebner, 72, is the oldest.

8. Top 10 rankings from August 2020.

Difference from today's (June/21) ranking:

  • Levon Aronian is now #5, from #7 (+2)
  • Anish Giri is now  #6, from #10 (+4)
  • Alexander Grischuk is now #7, from #6 (-1)
  • Shakhriyar Mamedyarov is now #8, from #11 (+3)
  • Wesley So is now #9, from #8 (-1)
  • Teimour Radjabov is now #10, from #9 (-1)
  • Maxime Vachiver-Lagrave is now #12, from  #5 (-7)
