Fantastic young player. If there ever is another 'Fischer', he is the one.

Avatar of goldendog

Robson is very, very good but a new Fischer he ain't.

He isn't a GM yet

Others have Made GM younger

Fischer was US Champion at 14

Fischer was a GM at 15 and a WC Candidate

...but that's hard to match isn't it. It took a Kasparov to be so good so young.

I hope Robson keeps blasting away. Maybe he'll be an elite GM someday?

Doubt he is going to be a Fischer, but damn, the kid is good. Lots of big things to come.

You just made the most annoying post to read I have seen in a long time. What is wrong with regular spaces?

Your SPACEBAR doesn't work?!  And you're insulting someone for not guessing that?  Um... yeah.

Robson came up 1/2 point short of his third leg for the GM title in the just finished Spice Cup. Had he won his last game he would have been the youngest US GM ever, according to Susan Polgar's site.

...if you'd like to follow the progress of the tournament with pics. Finegold did get his GM title.

I really wanna see a big publicity stunt (like the K-K rematch just last week) themed like "World's Finest Under 21" or something and see the final round (probably) being between Robson and Carlsen. Or at least, just have the two of them play period, seeing as they're the top "young" players from the West and the East.

well it says on there that he's attended a lot of u.s chess tournaments and it says he's the youngest international master in history so i would say he's kinda like fisher

anyway ray robson is a good player i went to the world open 2009 chess tournament to watch i didn't play in it and i think i saw ray robson there thoguh  i found the info and all that at the last minute like 6 days before the tournament started so it was too late to make plans to play in the tourney

i'm probally going to go and play in it next year

Robson was an IM-elect at 13 but there has been an IM, Negi, at age 12-1/2 (approx.). Robson must be the youngest US IM ever? I haven't done any research on this one.

Karjakin was a GM at age 12 y. 7 mo.

unfortunatelly Ray didn't make it last night, the other fella Danny Rensch draw him. Danny got the IM title while Ray need to wait for a while. http://susanpolgar.blogspot.com/2009/09/americas-newest-im.html

It is important to note that Fischer had a much smaller pool of GMs to play against and earn his official title. It seems to me that Fischer being US Champ at 14 happened too long ago for people to really understand the gravity of it. Fischer played against and defeated world class Grandmasters at the age of 14, without the aide of all the wonderful, information sharing tools like the internet or GM level computer programs to train against. The Grandmaster title is certainly nothing to take lightly, but the calibre of player that Fischer faced was much higher than that faced by most of the genius wonderkids now bearing the GM title.

So what you're saying is that because today's players use powerful tools to prepare and improve their standard of play, they are not as good as the players of the past who only had books and a chessboard to develop their skills. By this logic the best player ever would be someone who had never even seen a chessboard or a set of rules of the game, or to use an analogy, the fastest runner would be some guy from distant past when there was no knowledge about training, nutrition, etc.

It may be valid to say that players from the past would play better chess if they had the additional help of computer tools for preparation, but it is the opposite of the truth to say that today's players are not so good because they use such tools.

My logic is that Fischers relative talent and strength has not, and probably will not ever be matched by a US player. These young guns may be rounding up GM titles, but their relative strength compared to other GM's is minimal. If anyone is gonna be a Fischer, it would Carlsen, who has proved his metle against true GM elite. To me, it's kinda like the Detroit Lions. Ok, sure, they are an NFL team, but they are not a top flight team. The crop of young talent may reach GM at a Fischeresque age, but do not play at a Fischeresque level.

Avatar of Syntax_error

I think I read some where that kids who start chess very early reach a maximum peek like every one else it just happens sooner. So we will have to wait and see if he can even be a super GM. But currently he is no Fischer.
