Just a question that I would like to post cos' I've been playing chess for about 7-8 months now and my current rating is 1400+ for rapid. Is this a decent rating, and how can I improve my game further? Thanks for the answers in advance happy.png

Depends on what u classify as good and what ur goals r for chess like if I was in this ur shoes I would be rly happy with making such great progress in only a few months at such a young age, however if I was to look at it from the perspective that I'm only 13 and I am 1700-1800 from playing for just over a year I would say that it is not so good (but still good) . But all that matters is that u have fun whilst playing and try hard to improve. For me stepping up from 1400 was one of the hardest thing in my life, my games usually did not consist of me blundering but it was more the fact that I did not make ideas or plans in positions but most of my move were something that looked logical, reasonable or aesthetic. From simply making logical ideas and plans in various positions instantly got me from 1400 to a few elo points away from 1700. I hope that helps

Age 14 doesn't matter much because age doesn't matter much with chess - what matters more is how long you've been playing it and how studious you are able to be with it.

Take a 14 year old who has been playing chess for a decade compared to an "older" 74 year old who just wanted a new hobby in retirement to keep their mind active: who do you think is the better player? In this case, the "older" player just learned how to play whereas the "younger" one actually has the most chess experience, so the 14 year old is likely to be higher rated grin.png

1500 generally speaking is very good and especially so considering you've been playing less than one year! Keep learning and improving happy.png

I think the chess.com average is close to 1200 or so; you are already much better than most online happy.png That is the great news!

The lesser news if you are more serious about chess is that most local chess clubs seem to have players around 1600-2000 range I notice, so among tournament players, 1500 is still lower...but it is amazing to be 1500 if chess is just a hobby you are good at!

I joined a local chess club (OTB) shortly after I reached 1500 chess.com rating. Playing people around your level and higher consistently while you learn is a great help to improving long-term and OTB chess clubs give you that valuable experience happy.png

That is pretty good when compared against the average player! I was still hanging queens and rooks very frequently after a year of playing.

14 will get you some browny points when you beat your uncle in front the whole family, I myself am saying this as 14 year old. But chess is a timeless game, both speaking as in that it never ages, and that any age can be good at it. It's not impressive for me to be a 1000 after a month of playing because i am 14 (although i have played before when i was like 6 so this is kinda unfair) I'd say it's impressive because i progressed from about 800 elo lichess (id say its around 600 in chess com) to 1000 as of now, and I seem to be improving, but all of this isn't impressive because I'm 14, again chess is timeless, and any age that is able to think and make decisions can play it just as good as anyone else. Also isn't learning easier At a young age in general? There have been studies that show learning a language at a young age is easier and you might not even be able to be truly fluent after a certain age on some languages. So I'd say it's impressive youre improving so much but idk about the age part, if anything it might help with a few things like understanding concepts or ego

I think it's better than average for sure. Anything above 1200 is good at 14.
