and online chess improves your trigger finger :P
Is Chess a game or a sport?

its a game
You have to justify what you say.
Its a board game

A never-ending topic; it's becoming favorite one! It's obviously a game. If done competitively, it is also a sport.

In french, you say j'ai joue les echecs (I have played chess). Therefore you play it, not do it, making it a sport

If you can't break a bone doing it, it's not a sport.... imho.
But I like the new category of "mind sport" -- now that's creative thinking.
What I want to know is, why do some people need chess to be a sport? Nationally and internationally, prize money wise, etc, there may be reasons for it. But psychologically, for the average person who will never play at such a level, there is still a vein of thought that seems to need chess to be a sport. It seems to have something to do with how we English speakers, at least, value the words "game" (often trivial, something children engage with) and "sport" (often physical and testing the limits of human endeavour).
I think because we value the idea of "sports" more than "mere games" in many societies, we tend to want chess to be a sport.
Chess isn't a sport whatsoever. Similarly, hiking isn't either, it's a physical activity. Chess, however, is totally a game. That's why people are thinking about having it in the Olympics, as they are the olympic Games, not the olympics sports.
Personnally, to consider something a sport, it has to minimally require a certain physical effort that can get you exhausted.
Chess isn't a sport and neither do I consider it one. Chess is a game and a beautiful one at that too.
According to this it could be considered a sport, http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sport
but, in my personal definition a sport requires physical activity. All sports are gmaes not all games are sports type of thing.
If you're sweaty, physically and emotionally spent after a gruelling tournament round (or a bone crushing blitz contest) then is it still just a game?
I've lost weight at tournaments.
Giving simuls too - you have know idea how much effort it is to run around on the inside of a circle of tables. Eat plenty of bananas, drink sports drinks.
Naw, it's a sport.
Anything can be a sport by what goes of your definition of sports. A staring contest can be a sport. You need to be mentally and physically prepared ( not tired, ate well, well hydrated) and mentally prepared ( not stressed out ). The concentration and will-power of having you not blinking once in 24 hours will make you sweaty, physically, mentally and ( emotionally wtf?!?! ) spent. A sport is not defined by the fact that it makes you sweat or not, or that it's something you need to prepare for. Losing weight has nothign to do with this either.
Sports revolve around the physical abilities of someone whereas chess doesn't. Even if you ate well, and can jog a 1 mile stretch in 12 minutes and slept well and drank redbull, this only helps a bit. Chess is a mental game. Playing over the internet shows why this is not a sport.
if you can play a "sport" over the internet, well it's not a sport, it's a game.
It's a sport, two players are trying to achieve the same result(win), and uses the same location(chessboard) at the same time, with the same equipment( pieces).

Best game ever!
Game, as in a contest of mental prowess. Not a sport; which I consider a contest or demonstration of physical prowess.
