In the us most people respect chess and view it as a sign of intelligence even tho few play. But from my experience a good game of blitz in a public place usually draws attention. So if you really wanna make it cool, go to a pub and place bets on blitz games while you drink a cold brew.

I think if you're a nerd that plays chess it's nerdy. Otherwise no. When I was in high school all I did was fist fight and community service. That's nerdy to me. I was laughing the other day when Q21C said his mom took away his laptop just because he got agitated and swore while doing chess puzzles. My mom had it way worse than that. Chess is way cooler than acting like a thug or conforming to what everyone thinks is cool.
The real unsung servants of chess in Britain and who are geekier than the players are the 4NCL arbiters.
In my university our chess club usually plays in the library, and we gather quite a bit of attention. It's not geeky, at least not where I live. Even HBO did a documentary on chess in my town. And Rico from Modern Family starred in Endgame , which is a movie based on chess in my town. Bottom line is that chess is a respected board game and anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot.
