For me it’s a hobby. I am far from having athletic prowess and I use to do MMA.

Sort:
IMO a true sport should require both physical fitness and athleticism. Chess has no physical element so I would say no to it being a sport.
To me it’s an art

It’s a hybrid of sport, art, and recreational hobby. For example, it’s a sport because you are competitive and requires skill and practice just like any other sport. It’s an art because like painting, singing, music, dance, etc…it requires creative proficiency and beauty. Third, it’s a hobby because it requires free time or leisure in order to bring entertainment, enjoyment, and pleasure during play. To sum it up, it’s all of the above.

If you really believe that chess is a sport, what about checkers? Monopoly? RISK? So-called esports? Things that are popular become competitive, but that doesn't make them sports.

It is a game. Not a sport, not art, not science. We don't need to claim all these titles to make this beautiful game valuable.

I think it was very important to open a second topic about this nonsense subject. One was obviously not enough.
Funny how horse racing, drag racing, fishing, hunting, billiards, darts, poker, etc...are considered sports when they don't require much physical activity. Chess is considered a mind sport.

If only we had just two threads about sports on this forum, this is a topic which continue to come back almost every month. Mostly because people from different culture have different definitions of "sport" and feel offended when someone with a another definition tries to tell them how things "really are".
