In a sport you must stand up in order to carry out the activity!
I like that :)
It's a little less restrictive than my "spill my beer" qualifier, but the idea is the same. Perhaps a combintation of the two is required before someone declares darts a sport....
Elections come to mind as fitting that definition too.
I think that at some point -- with a very few exceptions for, say, wheelchair sports -- all sports require you to stand up.
Horse riding, car racing, motorcycle racing, speedboat racing, arm wrestling, cycling, game fishing, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, rafting, polo, model aerobatics, RC racing, robot combat, aerobatics, pigeon racing, thumb wrestling, kite flying.
but car racing/ F1 etc is not a sport - it is driving a car. No different to steering your chess pieces. Both are great competitions and i like F1 and touring car racing . Yes I know F1 drivers ar very fit, but so are fighter pilots. They are not sports people.
in horse racing / polo- umm ..the horse, if anything, is the major athlete and competitor. Don't say different, my family have some race horses.
Why is it called Motor sport? Of course car racing is a sport! Aeroplane acrobatics is also a sport.

By that definition, Suggo, the Olympic Games is only games and no sports. The reason why motor sport is marketed as a 'sport' is to generate sponsorship and media coverage as people (me included) are more intrigued and drawn to the brutish sporty element of competition on TV.
an individual or group competitive activity involving physical exertion or skill, governed by rules, and sometimes engaged in professionally
Suggo - Pigeon Racing a sport...... maybe for the pigeon!
I am from north England, I know my pigeons, whippets and ferrets.
Horse racing is also a sport...and to suggest you are an indubitable expert because your family owns a couple of racehorses is hysterical!
You know your pigeons eh, well birds of a feather they say!

Chess is a game.
Horse racing is difficult to define as a sport. The jockey's job is to hang on and whip the horse at appropriate times (now in UK there is a limit on whipping frequency). Choosing when to whip is mind not muscle and actually whipping is not much more difficult than, er, moving a chess piece. Having said that the horse is a finely tuned athlete. The jockeys are generally 'fit' (so are many people though)in order not to have excess weight.
Enjoy.
