Is chess a waste of time?

Chess is no more or less a waste of time than trying to hit a little white ball into a hole in the ground with a stick.  I have found I am happier by being less judgemental about other's uses of their free time, be it arguing about what a particular coach should have done last weekend or what a particular general should have done over 150 years ago.  If hobbies didn't have any benefits no one would pursue them.

well put

I must have some like thinking or I would not have read these posts.  Partly I am curious as to what others think about it.  At this late stage, no matter how much time I put into it, it's still going to be just a hobby.  I have other hobbies and at what point do I "force" myself to pursue them, only to be gratified that I did devote time to them.  Anyone can sit and watch TV for hours -- that seems a waste of time.  Relaxation and intellectual stimulization are important, and satisfaction of solving puzzles or getting a good win.  I do it for the comraderie here also.  It's philosophy -- what do we do with or lives or what CAN we do?  While searching for the answers are to what are the most important things to me, I don't mind doing this sometimes or to even play cards like FreeCell or Spider Solitaire (2 suits) while I relax and let my mind tell me what I should do next.

I personally don't think chess is a waste of time it improves your strategy and education.

Compared to other entertainment a person could indulge in, chess is not a waste of time. For me, it is just for fun and yet I will always be challenged to play even better.

Yeah, maybe Magnus should be in a 9-5 job like every other Joe Blogs on the Planet instead of wasting his time being a chess genius and no.1 in the World making millions. Good point.

The original quote is from Shakespear, so.....

Chess is not a waste of time if you enjoy it. But if you do not, it is a waste of time

Time well wasted certainly...Cool

Yes of cource its a bloody waste of our time. I used to be a chess addict but now I don't even mention chess. Sometimes I just see chess news and that's it. I have wasted a lot of my valuable time on this bullshit game which could've been spent in some productive persuits. But now I am glad I am in control of my life and would definitely recommended all of you chess addicts here to leave chess and find some beautiful hobby to divert your attention from this trash game. Believe me you'll feel a lot better after a month of leaving and you'll definitely experience a final relief. I know it's very hard to stop playing at once but just delete your chess account and all of the chess related things that had invaded your valuable life and had diverted you from your career and productive lives. Best luck guys.

He is the best in the world at something, and lives comfortably. He enjoys chess, travels around the world, and once he retires he can easily make a living out of teaching patzers, writing a book or coaching. That is what I call acomplishment. Nobody plays chess if he/she doesnt feel it serves a purpose.

My reason would be studying about attention disorder regarding children and how it can be of help. For me chess serves that purpose.

Well i believe I took my valuable time out to change a few minds who really feel that this game takes most of their valuable time and that they can't even concentrate on their day to day lives. I just wanted them to gain control of their lives, and my comments certainly doesn't apply for people like you, so don't bother replying. Thank you.

Since time does not exist, how is it possible to waste that which has no existence?

Turbosammy

Chess is a good way to enjoy your life

What do you mean, "since time does not exist" of course it exists or you wouldn't be able to move.

I know time exists, 1.e4 tells me so.

Playing chess is fun, exciting, challenging and, when you play a beautiful game (don't matter much if you win or lose), gives a great esthetic  experience. Often, discussing the game after is is finished is rewarding.

I also love beautiful chess pieces, I find chess history interesting, following tournaments is exciting, and I enjoy the company of other chess players.

I think that OP is pointing on computers and chess engines which will at some point eventually kill this beautyful game.

Exactly, you are the only person with a logical mind on this thread so far.

By only considering one side of an issue, you are not posing a question.
