If you really want to know, maybe take a less biased sample. If you go to a twilight fan website and ask them if they think the twilight series is important, you aren't going to get too many "no"s.

No game or sport is important. There are ones who different sized fan bases and different sums of money involved but none of them are important.

There isn't much in the world I would ever classify as important. Curing disease, striving to give people a safe and free environment to live in without tyranny, anarchy, and crime, and the decisions world leaders come to that could effect the 7 billion people on this planet are about all I'd stick in the important category.

As a random aside, I think this is the first thread I've seen someone post that I've actually played a game against.

llol yeah it makes since... someone put it clearly ... that its just a game... and chess is wonderful but at the end of the day all it is is a game... i guess... this is true ... it makes me think though... i wish everyone could play chess... at least try... maybe even have chess learning class... at sschool...yeah... chess is the greatest... i think its important though aniways

ChessSponge... llol... yeah isnt that a coincidence

I think chess is important and fun.  Important is relative to each individual. To each his own

Apart from entertainment I believe it has therapeutic value for stressed out individuals like me.  Also is good mental exercise to keep our brains working AND has been taught in many schools.

I think to the general populace it's simply seen as another game like Monopoly or Scrabble. So it's not looked at as too important. Which is fair because, after all, at the end of the day it is just a game. You and I may think it's the most artistic, culturally significant game around; however, it's not life or death.

Having said that, it is no less important than baseball, soccer, football, enjoying a good book, enjoying the outdoors, etc. We all like what we like and there is nothing wrong with that!

the general populace is repelled by the level of mental effort required to play and improve; esp in the U.S.; we're all too dazed and satiated by food and tv (and food tv)

Yes. Chess is important.

It's more important to some than others.  Without chess, I'd simply find another outlet to dominate my free time.

i guess it must be important to me since I spend tons of time playing; also, it has been demonstrated repeatedly by brain scans that games like chess enhance brain functioning and overall well-being; so I vote yes

Avatar of neo-metacrash

No..... chess is not important, we're just here posting on chess.com for some stupid reason. Laughing

Importance is pretty subjective.  To some I'm sure it is, so I guess the answer is a simple yes.

No, it's not. So how come I just spent the last 24 hours playing and posting?

Perhaps you are also not important.
