Is chess less fun when you gets good?

I had set a goal to become a USCF A player before the year was up. I acheived that goal in June in Vegas. What it made me realize is that i love the game of chess, love playing, and love studying, love teaching. What i dont love is knowing that i HAVE to do all of that (minus the teaching). Now i study when i want, how i want, what i want, and I dont care about the rating. Its anumber, it isnt who, or what i am.

I've always been of the opinion that I people don't really learn to enjoy things until they're proficient at them... But, with sports there comes a point when you're so strong that you realize that the pros are on a whole different echelon that you really don't want to work towards.
I was a high level baseball player (rookie league minor leagues) and at that level I didn't actually enjoy playing, it felt more like work. Then I started coaching high schoolers a few years ago and have gone on to win multiple championships and now I find it far more emotionally gratifying than when I still play.
I see the same apex with the NMs/IMs I'm friends with. They're far more interested in coaching than playing.
I think I'm just approaching the final class level where chess is enjoyable, then I may put it down for a bit and just wow my friends over casual games when I give them time odds and rook odds.

Personally , as I went from a D class player to NM chess did become less and less fun but my results improved . I had more fun as a weaker player as I had no real expectations of winning but as you get better you do have those expectations and when you don't win it can be very depressing = NOT FUN . As you climb the ratings ladder you have to work harder and harder to continue to improve and with work and expectations it becomes less fun and more pressure . Now that I am a senior player my game is regressing and the expectations arent what they once were so the fun is increasing while my results suffer ...

it is less fun because you have to study more to get better
then you waste allthat time and then ask yourself why you wasted all that time
getting good at a boardgame
i think chess is really boring
that is why hardly anyone plays it
