Is Chess really a waste of time?

I have found a 'Thought Provoking' article  http://www.blackandwhiteindia.com/2012/06/chess-is-waste-of-time-in-life.html

Eagerly waiting for your views.

Nothing has a purpose, because the sun is blowing up in 7 billion years. Might as well enjoy a board game until it happens, right?

Psalm25

Might as well ask if any hobby is a waste of time. Is listening to music, dancing, taking photographs, gardening, playing cards, watching baseball or football, going to the movies and going on a vacation wastes of time? Only if they don't bring you enjoyment. If you like playing chess and it enriches your life, it's not a waste of time.

Chess? Not sure. This thread...

Psalm25

Just read the article (mercifully brief) and my answer remains unchanged:) The author says chess displaces time and effort that could be used on better things (paraphrased) but doesn't give examples. Should every waking moment of our lives be spent in earning money and being a good citizen? Why not speak against all leisure activities? Watching a football game is a waste of time cause you could be volunteering somewhere. Going to the movies is a waste of time because you could be working a second (or third) job. The author doesn't seem to place any importance on the value of taking a break or on the positives of chess in teaching the importance of planning, consequences, sportsmanship and other benefits. Kind of seems like a stick in the mud:)

Psalm25

By definition! Case closed:)

Everyone has an opinion. Whether its helpful or not, is individualistic.

I believe personally it has more helpful benefits than harmful ones.

Obviously if a person has a mental disorder, he had it before starting to play chess. Its very doubtful chess caused the disorder. It may even be helpful to some with disorders. Anything can be a debate however.

All man does ultimately is nothing but dust in the wind, and vainity.

Its like saying why bother to breathe, we are all going to die anyway, its just a matter of time. We have no control over it.

Chess is a game, we play games because we enjoy them, isn't that a good enough reason. It is for me at least. My 2 cents.

hmmm buddy i agree with u on other fronts but dont say that ""All man does ultimately is nothing but dust in the wind, and vainity.""

after we die we have to face judgement day ..depending on ur deeds it will be either eternal heaven or hell....ur good deeds do matter..trust in god n nothing will go in vain

Better playing chess than smoking, drunking, drug and staying all the time at the disco. This is really wasting time and damage yourself. But no playing chess. Chess teaches you hardwork, humility and respect for your opponent and it opens your mind. Stupid trolling article. He talks about wasting time, but he wasted his time writing that provocative article.

not sure why this would bother you, just sit back with a nice cup of tea and have a chuckle at their existential angst

Psalm25

Doesn't really bother me; just pointing it out:) More of a Monster drinker than tea, though I've learned to dilute it with water:)
