Is GothamChess Overrated?

Maybe it is just me, but I find I learn stuff from watching all of vids that I watch.

Levy's ability/willingness to point out his own errors, means when he's razzing some noob it doesn't come across as mean spirited, at least to me.

I like Eric Rosen's vids and have recently started watching some of Daniel Naroditsky's vids as well.

I'll try to watch the other you tubers mentioned in this thread, and expect I'll learn stuff from them too.

His instructional YouTube vids are good and I wish there was more of that.  But does make me think his courses might be worthwhile.

Personally, I think that he used to have great educational content, but over the last few months, it has been lacking. I think there is too much "Guess the elo" personally and the educational side has greatly decreased. This is just my personal opinion, with constructive criticism.

watching gotham and his bunch of r/anarchychess viewers is not a good method of improvement honestly. And even his educational videos are a bit lacking - of course, it's aimed for lower rated players, but he could at least differentiate between something like a King's indian and a pirc.

Overrated? As a chess 'influencer?' - He's quite good when he has genuine chess content to focus on, rather than his awful analogies and anecdotes. I find it annoying as hell how he interacts with comments from subscribers in videos. Dude really needs to get off the caffeine.

It was hilarious when he wore that muscle shirt after Rosen started working out, but I don't think it was entirely ironic.

BTW Is this a ball gag or a chupa chup?pin.png

Gotham is not overrated. His videos are entertaining and funny, many of them are also very educational. I would like to see him offer more material on openings again. His podcast is also great, by the way!

His channel is very infomative and good. no question. But I have to agree with OP, that he used to be even better

I like his colorful and curious video thumbnails. His content is balanced in education and entertainment.

He is an OK guy tongue.png

Which is why popular youtubers hire someone to make them.

I'm new to the GothamChess channel and I like the presentation and am learning a lot from it and can see there is plenty more as I increase my skill level. Levy has an accent that's easy to understand and pronunciation and diction that makes the material easy to absorb. I also like the relaxing background scenery and hey, as a brit I just love that New York twang. It reminds me of Friends.

How this guy and many others make such a fortune through chess I will never know. Well, I do know... People are rather stupid.

I've got all I can out of the Gotham channel because all the content now seems geared towards mocking cheaters with no real benefit to watching it. I imagine content creators that build up a large following become under pressure to keep adding new content so inevitably the quality suffers. It's become more about entertainment than education.

As long as his viewers are entertained by him being annoying, all is well.
