Is it cheating to refer to YouTube videos in Daily Chess?

Currently playing Daily Chess and was wondering if I could pull up YouTube videos with strategies such as pins, forks, et cetera.

I'd say so. You're utilizing resources that should be utilized outside of the game.. either during post-game reflection / analysis or before starting.

While it's not explicit as using an engine or an analysis board, it is disingenuous on its face. Every game should be executed with your own devices.

Daily is a bit different than live chess. To quote:

  • Do not use tablebases or any other resources that show the best move (in both Online and Daily chess)
  • You may use Opening Explorer or other books without engine evaluations in Daily chess only (not in Online / Live play)

So, anything that is engine based or anything that gives you the best move is out, everything else is ok in daily.

For instance, if you have an ending with king and 2 bishops vs king, then watching a video about how to win such endgame would not be ok, as you get the exact method on how to win.

But if you play Ruy Lopez, you can watch a general video about Ruy Lopez, that shows some lines and ideas for the opening (as long as there is no engine involved).

The reason is simple, some daily games might last for weeks or months. It would be really odd if you couldn't look at any chess content during that time.

Of course, in live games, you can't use anything apart from your brain. happy.png

What they said. You can incorporate your Chess studies into your daily games short of finding an exact answer to a certain position. Daily came from the old days when people would play by mail. And I still can't find the ch***ing forum on my phone app. I was given a link which takes me to it, but there's no information about how to join. It used to be listed with all the other forums. No biggie, just wondering.

All the clubs are accessible from the website, not the apps.

Thank you for answering! There should be three bars at the bottom right portion of the screen and if you tap on it there should be a button somewhere on the menu that takes you to the forum page

I would think that it was fine! based on the rules that people referenced and a tad of common sense. I would say similarly, taking chess lessons while also having active daily games is fair in the same vein

Is Chess not such a worthy game to play with your own mind and own ideas?

You do not feel like consulting another player,  book,  videos or such would spoil what could have been  yours?

So are you saying people should never go to lessons for chess, and everyone should learn from scratch? Why shouldn't people consult other players, books, or videos?

I have no intention of doing so.

Chess seems fun to me,  so I prefer to play it myself rather than having someone else play or decide for me.

If another guy wants to consult his wife's boyfriend or otherwise not call the shots then do you I guess lol.

Every pro malding right now because you said to never consult anyone ever. I'll go tell magnus real quick

There is a difference between applying your studies of the game and consulting other people for moves. Using outside help is cheating. What we're saying is that you can study various aspects of the game, such as opening theory or tactics, and then apply it to your daily games.

I, too, use the IHNIWID method of the Fischer System, FIO OYO. That's the I Have No Idea What I'm Doing method of the Fisher System, Figure It Out On Your Own. Good luck with that.

I've never consulted a Youtube video during a Daily game, but I can't imagine why it would be considered wrong to do so. It should be perfectly OK, since it does not refer to engine analysis, nor does it indicate the best move... only the Youtube presenter's OPINION of the best move.

Lots of people have OPINIONS.

That's basically my own method, except that I analyze (just me, not an engine) complete Master games as well... and sometimes I even remember them... which leads to situations like this one, where my departure from known book theory is an innovation of my own on move 28.

😁 The difference being I've got about 20MB of chess knowledge on my brain hard drive and you have probably 10TB on yours. I finished my 1st lesson the other day. 🕺

Analyzing master games has helped me more than anything in my chess life, I think. The puzzles, especially the daily, has strengthened my end game. I'm reviewing the basics and starting to study opening theory. At my age I've realized how hard it is to learn new things. My brain hard drive is crammed so full of so much knowledge, I need to clean it out to make some room to stuff more chess knowledge in. Anyone know of any good cleaner apps for the brain?

And you get a -1, Blue Emu. An Heroic...An historical.... No one uses the word 'an' correctly anymore. I think it's because there are no editors anymore. 😁

It is perfectly fine to look up a theoretical endgame (which K+B+B vs K totally is) in a daily/correspondence game. It is not finding the best move in a book that is no-no. It is the use of an engine or other player's help that is.

BlueScreenRevenge

The use of any resource that does not have engine or table base evaluations attached to lines is perfectly fine in a correspondence game.

Computer tablebases are also forbidden, just like engines are. You always have to tack that provision on, since a tablebase is NOT an engine.

Correct.
