is it just me or are the daily puzzles off a bit?

My first thought would be the objective is to get a checkmate asap. However when I go through these I either end up losing vast amounts of material or find myself in a horrible situation! What’s the deal with these? Anyone?
The deal is you need to study them harder.
Your assumption of the objective is wrong. In a real game there is no-one to tell you there is a mate in 3, or that you can win a knight if you look hard enough. The daily puzzles sometimes give you a clue in the title, but otherwise it requires you to look. If you fail to see the moves then you should play through the puzzle until you do understand.
If you still do not see the reasoning then ask a specific question in the thread itself or start a separate one. Chess is not easy but YOU need to do the work.

If the ending position looked really horrible, then it was probably stalemate, a draw. Any other set of moves and you would lose so a draw is good.

Daily puzzles rating varies significantly day by day.
Sunday puzzles are rated <500.
Occassionally some puzzles are rated >3000.
I have tactic rating around 2400, but there are some daily puzzles I cant solve
