Use of an engines on chess.com is not allowed.
Is it legal??
Hey! I have a quick question about what is legal in a correspondence game. Is it okay to play a move... THEN put the position, before you had moved, into an engine. You see the +/- analysis the engine gives.. Then see how the move you played affected this analysis.. Is it OK to use an engine in this way when playing correspondence? Your not using it to pick a move.. but still using it before the end of the game.
I have never done this yet.. But I would like to if it's fair. Any comments are appreciated! Thanks
What if by analyzing the move you previously made, the computer spat out a line of analysis that considered your previous, current, and possible future moves? In which case I'd say no, you shouldn't do it.
I think the only time you can use computer analysis is if it were generated before the game began. This would be not unlike using a book, IMO
Thank you Diakonia. I could not find that for some reason, but it is very clear! No engine use at all while the game is still on-going. Will certainly keep to that. Thanks again.
And aknife_01. Good points! Will definitely hold off on any engine analysis until the game is completely finished ![]()
I don't like using engines at all unless I'm analyzing my games afterwards. The only thing is I hear a rumor going around that another site is taking off because people are allowed to play engines on both sides.
This is allowed on the correspondence servers FICGS and ICCF and I think another German one. It is from these games that I generate my computer analysis, then I keep it in dropbox for future reference. For instance here is some good Bishop's Gambit analysis

no you cant plug your move into an engine that's going to give you a lot of information ie look the eval jumped 9+ points i can probably win a queen or look its mate in 14 as you can see these would give you an immense advantage , some things you can do in a correspondence game are: read a book(Wikipedia article if that is your thing) , move the pieces around (either otb or in the analysis mode ) , play slimier games.

Using databases with mostly computer played game and/or computer evaluations (numerical scores) isn't really allowed here in correspondence either. erik has posted about it in the past.

Thanks for the info, do you think you could dig up that post?
One reason I can think of is that, if you following some pre-existing computer analysis of yours for enough moves, its going to make it appear as though you were presently using a computer, and once that happens in enough of your games and you get investigated, poof say goodbye to your account.
I'll try to find it but just having your own games analysed, probably won't be enough as your opponent is unlikely to play the full line anyway.
Ok, here is a recent post by erik about databases.

Post 24. There may be some additional clarification in the topic (I posted for sure but erik may have said some more).
