Is it normal/Ok to report a player if you're unsure about their sudden performance spike?

Hi everyone,

I'm quite new here and still learning the ropes, so apologies in advance if this isn’t the right place to ask.

Earlier today, I played a game where I made a clear mistake in the endgame and lost. It felt like a fair loss and nothing raised any red flags during the game itself. However, after the match, I noticed that my opponent had a very high accuracy despite having a rating around 700. That surprised me a bit, so I looked at their recent games.

From what I could see, earlier today they lost a few games with accuracy levels that seemed typical for a 700-rated player. But then suddenly, they won five games in a row with accuracy scores above 90 – in some cases even hitting 100.

Now, I fully understand that people can have good days, or find a rhythm, or even use opening traps that work well. I'm absolutely not here to accuse anyone, and I have no desire to name or shame. I’m just wondering what is considered normal behavior on Chess.com in situations like this.

Is it okay to report someone if you're just unsure and want it looked at – or is it better to just let it go and move on? I’m fine either way, I just want to make sure I'm handling it in the right spirit.

Thanks in advance, and good luck with your games!

Yes. It is okay

He is absolutely cheating, you can't be 700 elo and make a 28 moves game with 99% accuracy, that is impossible, and over all your performance can't spike like that!
He will get banned.

Thank you all very much for your helpful replies!

I just wanted to give a quick update: I didn’t end up reporting the player myself, but I noticed that their account has now been closed due to a Fair Play violation.

It’s reassuring to know that the system works and that I wasn’t completely off in sensing that something was unusual. I appreciate the friendly advice and the respectful tone in your responses – it really helps newcomers like me feel welcome.

Thanks again, and see you on the board!

That is suspicious, and if you see something that you think is suspicious, go ahead and report, chess.com will investigate and only ban if they’re sure you were right and the person was cheating. There are so many people that just report everybody they lose to that their system is good enough to tell a legit report from a bs one, and although it is certainly a bad sport to report everybody who outplays you, the report feature is there for a reason and all it does is make chess.com look into their account more, not just instantly ban them.

#4 yeah, for an offense that obvious the system often works on its own, without reports.
