is it theoretically possible to boost ELO rating by 1000 point in 1 year?

Actually I found this:

and also this: http://www.jlevitt.dircon.co.uk/iq.htm

So, I retract my claim of 10,000 hours. Your chances have to be better than mine. Still, I don't believe it's possible to reach 2600 from 1600 in a year (Carlsen went from 900 to 1900 in his first year of training, but then it took him another 4 years to achieve GM title).

Unless you are good at chess and also good at penning your ideas about chess and are also a good coach, then you can make a lot of money. In fact, people like yusupov probably make more money than every top gm except world champions and vice world champions because of course the pot is pretty tasty in those matches.

Yeah, most GMs earn more from coaching rather than from competing.

In two years here of casual playing, 0 books read and no real desire to be a GM, I have improved about 150 elo.  I am happy with it.

I feel if I studied, read books and played more games I would maybe be up 300-400 elo in a year or two.

I don't think it's realistic to gain 1000+ in one year.  Sorry.

hello, im new here, i start playing chess just now, im interesting if my elo rating is 1600 is it possible if i train as hell i boost my ELO rating by 1000 point and get 2600? in train i dont mean only learning chess also i mean physical training, supplements for brain and many non standart methods to boost brain ability. well i dont like to talk good thing about me, but my mathematical abilities are very high , i was 4 times 1st place winner  of my country mathematical olympiad were participating over 60 000 people, that is reason why im thinking that i have advantage in thinking level in  logic  and  creativity, also i see what i proggresing too fast in anything if i train well, and that gives me hope to make big goals in chess,  but i am 21 years old and i dont know if it is problem to became top player because brain at this age less plastical then in childhood, what u think guys is it possible to boost by 1000 point from 1600 to 2600 in 1 year by only spenfing all day only chess? ps. sorry about my english

I read the whole thread, and I think better for you to invest your time in mathematics than chess. Play chess just for fun, but since you are already good in mathematics, you have better possibility to get very high level there and get many $$$ and fun from it :) Should always do what you do best.

i agree. been playing daily online for 3 years and just broke 1300 this week. when i've played against higher rated players there is clearly a difference in skill/experience and its a reflection of the amount of time they have put into their game.

i don't think chess is a game where skills growth is linear and you can plot it out. i think those above a certain level (i'd say 1700) are exceptionally good at what it takes. yes time, study and all that helps, but i think to be an expert player you've got to have a lot of natural ability.

I managed to gain 668 points in one year.

In December 2013, after the Greater Baltimore Scholastic Championship, my U.S.C.F. rating broke 1100 for the first time, so I was 1102.

One year later, I played at the 2014 Greater Baltimore Scholastic Championship and had my only perfect score of my entire career so far, getting clear first. My U.S.C.F. rating went to 1770.

So 668 points in one year is as close as I could come. But it gets harder once you get past 1800. Points stop flowing as easily because it's hard to win as consistently, in my experience at Class A level thus far.

OP: Better spend your time in maths. And going from 1600 to 2600 in one year is very unrealistic. 5 years would be needed at most.

@MyUSCFis1729 You don't know anything about me at all. Why are you saying I am overrated with no evidence?

You can actually do it. Dont listen to these guys, anything can be learnt. It just depends on how smart you are in learning. If you approach it as playing a game then you probably wont but if you study for it like a finals exam on quantum mechanics for 12 months you can probably achieve that and more.

EDIT: Im an obsessive learner. I find something new and I teach it to myself as quickly as possible. I completely engross myself in the task. For example, I taught myself python to quite a high level in a month. I went from having no knowledge of python to modelling the chaotic nature of weather by writing a code based on the Lorenz model using Runge-Kutta and Lotka-Volterra methods.

if you intend to put 100% effort into learning how to learn chess before you start learning it you'll be able to.
