I know people say that chess isn't really about IQ, and that anyone can improve with enough work, but I’m really starting to doubt that’s true, at least for me.

I started playing chess about a year ago. I’ve been doing everything people recommend.. puzzles, opening study, endgames, analyzing my losses.. but I still feel like I’m not getting anywhere. My rating barely moves, and every time I think I’ve finally learned something, I just make the same mistakes again.

It’s incredibly frustrating. I see people who started after me getting better quickly, and I start to wonder if there’s something wrong with me. Like, maybe I’m just not smart enough to really understand this game. Sometimes I genuinely feel stupid.

I hate feeling like this. Chess is something I actually care about and want to improve at, but it’s like there’s a wall in my brain that just won’t let me get better.

Is there anything I can do? Is it possible to actually increase your IQ or train your brain in a way that would help with chess? I’m honestly open to anything at this point. I just don’t want to feel like I’m hopeless.

Iq and being good at chess are two different things apretnttly hikaru took one of those scummy online IQ tests and got 100 chess is pattern recognition related to chess not circles and triangles

BigChessplayer665 i mean average iq is good for chess. So yes, it doesn't matter if its high or average, but I think it matters if it is low. Its comforting to know that i can relate to hikaru though

Plus you never know you might have ADHD or autism and score low for whatever reason rven if there's not

Plus you'd get higher scored on IQ tests the more you practice it's not really a great way to measure intelligence

Dont shame yourself, many chess players have the same problem as you. Even the greatest chess players start out small but become better through years of learning from their mistakes and trying things differently. I recommend you play games slowly and consider each move very carefully, this will prevent future blunders. You can also watch grandmasters games or watch chess YouTube channels (Gotham chess).

No offense, but I think you're afraid to hear the truth. And the truth is that you probably don't put in enough effort. Playing 3 0 Blitz will get you nowhere. Play slow chess, at least 60 minutes a game, and look at your game afterwards. That's how your brain will adapt. It's less fun than blitz and bullet, but you will improve. Good luck.
