Is there a place for trash talk in chess?

I think the answer is yes and that it can make things more interesting and fun.

Obviously, there are lines that should not be crossed.

What are your best lines or experience/s?

No

A couple of my favorite lines to use are: 'Stick to checkers.' and 'Don't think too hard, you'll hurt yourself.'  The first line works best immediately after you win the game, the second line works best when your opponent is taking a longer than usual amount of time to move.

Another good line to say is 'Well done, Kasparov.' immediately after your opponent blunders a piece.

:)

Okay, so after you beat an opponent that's rated at least 200-300 points above you and then they request a rematch (and they always will): Hang on, hang on... There seems to be some kind of glitch showing your rating to be 1800 (insert opponent's rating). [And then they proceed to destroy you. Haha.]

Edit.

I would never say this to a random opponent. The person I was playing was getting destroyed (in the first game) and called me pathetic for not finding the quickest mate.

Well, I always say gg, so I wouldn't use something like "Stick to checkers" unless the opponent was trash talking to me.

When I have an opponent that seems way over confident and thinks he is in complete control and dictating every move and then he suddenly goofs up or I turn the tide on him I have to throw in a "Ain't so cocky now are ya?!" ...or a "That'll cool your ass off!!"

Absolutely no place during a game, sometimes you can be thrown off your game because of that. Its not chesslike😃

Is there a place for trash talk in chess? Easily the most rednecked thing I have heard/read today.

Only if the person you are playing is a friendamd knows you don't mean what you are saying

no, which is why the chat box should be closed by default unless the players are friends.

I like yelling "Checkmate, FAG!" when I win.

Trash talk is ONLY acceptable if it is (a) good natured, (b) is not discriminatory (i.e. not racist, sexist, misogynistic, homophobic, islamophobic etc etc etc) and (c) previously agreed and/or understood part of that particular game (e.g. in some of Danny Rensch's bullet brawls).

It is hard to tell whether someone's trash talk is "good natured" over the internet - with Danny's bullet brawls, there is the video stream and not just words in a chat box. Even if you mean it to be so, that sense and context is often lost over the internet - my advice would be to not try it unless you are already friends with the other person and said so beforehand.

It is also unacceptable to retaliate against someone else's trash talk with the more of the same - the moderators will act against BOTH parties rather than just the offending person. We don't care "who started it", but we do care about who is perpetuating it.

I like" I taught you better than that"

There's definitely a place for trash talk in chess. People don't have to take it seriously...

people don't have to trash talk (text thats only worth binning) at all, but it may be in the nature of some.

No. Its a gentlemans game. Trash talking and insults have no place in the game.
Avatar of eagleyes77

Absolutely Not. Do not talk to your opponent during chess.

follow the examples of GM's. do they ever talk to each other during matches? No.

I'd say that the only time that I'd trash talk is in casual OTB blitz or bullet against someone that I know well.  Maybe OTB Bughouse as well.  In general, it's accepted as part of the game when you're playing with your friends and messing around, but on the internet against random strangers (as David said) it just comes across as poor sportsmanship.

100% agreed except that once in a while you will get a rude player. Either they will say something which anyone would find rude and unnecessary or they will run the clock down, refusing to move at all, in a completely losing position.
