Is this or is this not end game?

chess gameI was playing a friend, I blundered and he won the game, he said it isn't end game as there is more than 13 points of material left on the board which he read on Wikipedia. When I look at the graph, I can see there is a beginning, a middle and an end, so when he checkmates me, this is endgame right or wrong? Thanks in advance for answering. If I am wrong, please can someone explain exactly what defines as end game.

A common misconception by beginners is that endgame means the end of the game. That's not what it means. Beginners often lose in the opening or middlegame.

There's no quick and easy definition of the endgame (like counting points) but generally it's when the material is reduced to the point that a mating attack is not possible, so the main focus is on queening a pawn. You could also say it's when the king is safe to participate in the fight (in the endgame players typically rush their kings to the center).

There are exceptions such as heavy piece endgames, where the king still needs to hide due to checkmate or draw by perpetual check, but more or less when material is reduced and the practical goal for both players becomes queening a pawn (as opposed to mate), then that's the endgame.
